Today 2as a cold, 40's, day with a continuous drizzle. I decided to take a walk and track turkey before all snow was gone. I didn't get far for the ledge near my garden on the ridge needed major cleaning. So I got to work clearing a tangle of limbs off the trails and rebuilt 2 great ground blinds in the process. Mean while I came upon numerous turkey tracks. I expected this because it is a historical turkey area but my domestic breeder turkey have been talking with them. 6 hrs later soaked to the bone I finished up. The dead ash and maple will be dropped and a seeding put down as soon as the ground defrosts,
April 15th here. We've had a very mild winter here and I expect the property to have a lot of birds moved back in quite a bit earlier than normal. Usually there is a fair amount of snow that has to melt before the birds show back up but this year there is barely a couple inches on the ground. On a side note, the lack of snow run-off is going to make for a very dry summer and fire season. And I'm concerned for how good morels will come up this year. Hoping for a pretty rainy Spring.
We, as I've mentioned numerous times in my shoveling post have had a good amount of snow. That said and not to be a conspiratist the snow melt was rather different than past years. The snow this year had a different structure it was really granular . It melted faster but without the rapid water flow we always see with snow melts. We also have zero snow piles left at all. I had shoveled snow higher than the parked Marquis roof. So to the turkey I was surprised at the #'s seen due to last year's lack of poultry sightings . That said, our nights and early mornings are a ruckus chorus of coyotes, adults and pups. If we had a wild hog issue that wouldn't bother me as much. NYS eradicated the hogs years ago before they could take hold. That leavesfawnand poults as their main fare here.
Heading to Nebraska March 25th for the opener for archery season out there. Be my 4th time going out there. Beautiful out in Chadron, and got true merriams out there. Gonna be there for a week and so far the weather looks promising.
our season opens on 4-22/wed. ... my 3 day draw hunt is the 30th, 1st/2nd ... No bow, just turkey shotgun/12ga 3" Win. LR 5's w/ a Red Dot ! .... watched 2 toms fanning last Fri. while finishing up my 'deer scouting/shed hunting' ... I'll go back this Fri/Sat. to check out a few set up spots I like ... I need to get to Bass Pro and check out the hen decoys, my old one is pretty beat up, the Tom/Jake decoy is fine, I use a real Jake fan on it .... do NOT forget the Permethrin !!
Opens 4/11 here in NC. Ran out to my land last weekend to check for sign (and mushrooms), I found little of either. Did spot a few Jake’s while driving around. https://www.instagram.com/p/DWuEVTElL0bqnpInffQdndTklB9f0d7KA-Rxns0/?igsh=MXhvZmdscG04eHpocg==
Early youth season opens today, Idaho gives youth under 18 a chance to get out a week before the main 15th opener. CJ and I will be out this weekend to see if we can light up a bird for him. Weather forecast looks pretty crappy though, hoping we can get it done right off the bat Saturday morning.
Tennessee season opens on the 11th. Might try to go the following week. My son has had turkeys in his backyard, pecking on the dribbles from the bird feeder. He is cautious that might be considered baiting. Has about 5 acres but be best to use a bow.
Nebraska was good to us this year, my buddy ended up going with me and we both tagged out pretty quick. Indiana season starts April 22nd, gonna try and lop a turkeys head off this year, so should make for a fun season! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I forgot, our Youth weekend is 18th/19th, cant go scout in the AM then .. drats .. today is a rain out and cold 42 deg now ! .... tomoorow will be better, but I have to drop front pads in the Tacoma, maybe in the PM if I get the truck done .. there are a few sandy dusting areas I'd like to check out, this rain may ruin that idea ..
