Ha, not often pictures immediately conjures up another site. The second one looks like fingers reaching for a right foot. P.S. Great scenery!
25 yards from computer room window. Son just got through cutting up a big maple there. . Funny how they went right to it. Come on May 1!
22 hens just ran past the window and down through the length of property. Must be roosting somewhere out back.
Whats that brown stuff?? thought you guys got more snow last nite? Sadly I went to local state forest today scouting, no new sign, only a little old scratching, looks like I will be just hunting over in Jersey this year. Sucks leaving 3 big Toms here, getting up at 2AM, drive 1 1/2 hrs to hope I find a Tom that wants to play.
It's been a roller coaster. Up to 50 during the day SOMETIME rain then 20's snow at night. The bad winds we had with some rain this weekend melted most of the snow. . This morning we are getting rain that will turn to snow tonight.
As great it is to see so many Tom ,young and older , it was FANTASTIC to see those 22 hen. I really was worried about our hen population last year. Yes we had at least 3 different smaller groups on the hill. That said I didn't see many poults and I found so many wings with the fawn legs in the tree stands and a few open blinds.
So I sit down for lunch. Look out and again there's 4 Jake and a long beard right where son has been working. Now that is where I put a new plot in the year before last, but it's just dirt right now. It has me thinking, knowing the guys around us bait, are the turkey seeing the yellow chips from cutting the trees up and coming in thinking it's corn? That would be an interesting way to "decoy " turkey during g season. I mean they aren't eating the wood chips but they check them out...ha here they come again! This tablet takes Lousy pics! Pic of t ree he's cutting and the birds
Change in weather on the way. How do I know? Well NOT THROUGH WEATHER REPORTS! I checked the week report several times today and it's only 9:30a.m.. Each time it was different and way different a couple of times. How I know we are in a warm up for certain, a single ,not group, Tom just hung out in the back wood lot. He spent most of his time on a high spot watching the woods. Preening and fluffing. He then decided to do a few gobbles and watched some more before taking a walk down one of the trails heading deeper into the woods. Tom's are slowly braking up and scouting hen movements. Ha just looked up and he must have caught the attention of another single long beard. Oh the bigger first Tom didn't go far. He's down on the trail all fanned out and strutting. Now coming back in strutt to meet the second Tom. Dang ! Lost them behind trees what fun!
I enjoy seeing and reading about the turkey you get to watch. I very much enjoy hunting them, so much fun with a lot of action usually. My spot is still under 3' of snow. It opens in about two weeks, April 15th, I'm not very hopeful that all the snow will be gone by then. We've had cooler than average temps and they are saying that's what we'll see through April too. The turkeys don't move back into the area until most of the snow has been gone for at least a couple of weeks. I may be hunting them later than normal this year. Our season runs until May 25th.
For all the work I've done around here I can say my best return has been my turkey population. They change things up a bit in movement but that's due to people. Ex. Nieghbor next to our roosting area did a hard logging last year. Another was out cutting in the pines in an area the turkey hang out just off a hay field on one side and corn field onthe other. Then I know for sure of two "feeders". So now I have them sorting out a strutting zone right beh8 d the house and roosting father up the hill off us. This will change my opening morning sit.
Yep this is going g to be a strutt zone I watched a group of 7 Jake and a long beard milling around 5 acres. They moved off and here come 15 hens , jakes, and 4 long beard came in and milled around then went in the opposite direction of the first group. The red building in the back ground is an enclosed blind.
Holy hell! We stopped to pick up turkey loads for me. First only had Winchester xx in my 3 inch 5 load, 20 dollars a box! Then get told I will need a full background check starting next month to buy amo. Told check will be at MY COST and the gov. Will not tell sellers what this will be. Then Hochol is imposing a added 10% tax on top of that. Well F you I'll drive out of state and or have people I know out of state purchase what I need to hunt.
No . They weren't too happy either. Hochol is going to take the NEW Ammo Tax and supposedly put it toward a gun violence victim fund.. in other word's funnel it towards hhhmmmm other areas. The full background was in the works a while. That is another NYS money grab. They can charge what ever for it. I see a future of opening day archery looking like opening day gun. The woods are about to get way quieter. I have already noticed the slow silencing of the gun club. BTW I Picked up another box of shells 20g. That had a turkey on it. Hubby says that's # 9 shot way too light for turkey. More skeet shooting . OK I've always used 5 's anyways. Then he turned the box over to price. Said you definitely don't want these 55.00 a box I thought 20 a box was crazy for the XX.
TSS 9# ? If it is, please try one thru your gun, TSS good out to 40yds+, but it does not like a lot of restriction. TSS is the best turkey shot out there, wish I could shoot TSS 9#, Jersey is stuck on 7 1/2# as being smallest shot allowed.
Hubby did some research on that this morning because the price blew him away. To be truthful he doesn't turkey hunt or deer hunt like me so doesn't keep up on stuff. Now that's said I won't change what works out of my guns. This is going to be a VERY HARD issue for me this deer season. It's getting almost impossible to find my BRENEKE 3 inch mags for my smooth bore 20g. browning. Back to the birds...well the guy 2 doors down with a mature Norway forest is in the midst of cutting a lot of those spruce.the turkey and the deer roost/bed heavily in his trees especially in bad weather. Heavy wi ds,raining snow. Here we go with another movement shift. Now we'll see if he manages the clean up to encourage fawn and nesting. His trees are the tall ones behind my road side trees
Got back from my Nebraska trip Friday. I was lucky enough to harvest a nice merriam on the 5th day of the trip. Weather was bipolar which is typical out in Chadron. 35 yard shot. It was a great trip and now just patiently waiting for Indiana season to start in a couple weeks. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
