Well, I'm going to add a few calls to the arsenal before spring season hits. I've got a simple Quaker Boy slate with a composite striker, a few mouth calls, a Knight & Hale box call (two actually). I'm looking to add a glass and another slate to the mix. Now, Woodhaven is at the top of my list, but before I drop almost three times the $$ on these calls compared to others on the market, is it worth it? I'm new to turkey hunting, and even more of a novice at calling. I did manage to kill four birds so far with just that little $15 Quaker Boy slate and box call, but I've heard it enough from seasoned experts to trust their opinions, and that opinion is to have a wide assortment of calls because you never just know what might work. So, needless to say, Woodhaven is on top of my list. My intent is to get the Cherry Classic Glass and then the Knight & Hale Ol' Yeller slate. Not sure I want to drop over $100 on two Woodhaven's So, are these calls a "get what you pay for" deal?
Check out Grand C calls. http://www.grandccalls.com/ I ran the glass at the Harrisburg show and it was pretty good. They are located in Carlisle, Pa.
Turkey calls are the same as everything else. If you wanna spend the money go ahead but the calls you already have will work fine. The knowledge of when and how to use them it what is most important. I do have one woodhaven mouth call, its good but i cant say its any better than the $2.99 4 pack of mouth calls i got last week.
What he said. The only time I think spending big money on a turkey call would be worth it is if you are hunting high pressured birds that have heard every standard call on the market and a new one might be enough to close the deal. Even then, it would be hard for me to justify.
When this guy talks about calling turkeys, write it down. Seriously. 99% of the birds I call in are with my confidence calls, and Denny directed me to 2 of the 3 that I currently use as "go to" calls. There is a small montain of dead birds I've called in with stuff he sent me.
Yep, Denny is one of those guys who, from what I hear, can REALLY call turkeys. Btw, Matt, give me a call sometime on that info you have. :D
Denny, can you order from these guys directly? I looked over their site and there aren't any dealers real close by.
wags is a world class caller. I've had more than one occasion to hunt with him and I sit in awe at some of the sounds he can muster.
You don't need a ton of calls! A good variety in sound is far more important. I know a few guys that have too many calls that sound the same. A very OVERLOOKED call is a gobble call...It works great, but be safe. I have also found a hung up Tom will change his mind and come in if he here's you raking your hands through the ground cover. Most important is to NOT overcall...it's not a calling contest. I have shot a Tom every year since I've started and if you know their patterns it will out way calling any day...That's a fact!
Yeah, I don't call much. Again, I'm not an expert at all, but I've had success calling to let the birds know I'm there and then waiting it out. It kills me sometimes, but so far it's paid off calling and then shutting up for the most part. I just want to have some additional calls in case they're lock jawed.
Great point. The bird I got last year was hung up with another Tom for over an hour. No call I made could coax them in. The last resort was to throw in a shaker gobble, and that literally brought them both in on a string.
