Hi gents. With bow season in WI settling down, I'm looking towards the upcoming Spring turkey hunt. Now, I have not hunted turkey with a bow before so I am wondering the best type of broadheads to use. I don't think my 100grain Montec's will be appropriate. Any thoughts???

Really like Spitfires personally. Might give the guillotines a try this spring though. Theyre just awesome to watch a kill when using them, but I rarely turkey hunt in open fields, and I do have some concerns with the open blades hitting something while the arrow is in flight. Also concerned about their flight at longer ranges of 20+ yards.

A Rage 2 blade will stop them in their tracks!

I hear nothing but good things about the Rage's...however, I'm hesitant to buy a mechanical broadhead. I'm afraid that the blades will hit something and break. Aside from that, how much grain? Should I stick with 100 grain or try to go a little lighter?

Stick with 100 gr if that's what you are set up for! I use the Rage 2 heads with great results. (see avatar) First bird with a bow taken in Tennessee last year hunting with a friend! As for breaking blades on an expandable maybe some but I have 3 deer with the same Rage head!

I talked with one of my buddies who has been bowhunting all his life and told him about the discussion on this thread. He has a few Rage 2 100 grains that he's going to give me to try out only because he's moved away from mechanical broadheads. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help, brother!:tu:

Spitfire Gobbler Getter is a great turkey broadhead.

The blunt rounded tip transfers all the energy of the arrow into the bird while the razor sharp blades inflict mass amounts of damage. I've seen plenty of videos with this head and it just drops the bird if placed correctly.

I general though you, any large cutting diameter mechanical will do the job. For turkeys, or smaller game where penetration is not an issue, you want to inflict as much damage as possible to stop the animal in its tracts. Large cutting mechanical broadheads do this perfectyly.

Rage 2 blade 100 gr work real well. Before I started with Rage I used Bullheads they are better than the gillotines. The blades on the bullheads won't break.

Really like Muzzys. Relatively cheap for a 3 pk and theyre low profile without a reduced knock down

I use Muzzy MX4 for everything. Even wabbits! I would stay away from mechanicals imo. Not a fan of them. the thin skin on a turkey may not allow the mechanicals to open.

I have killed over a dozen gobblers with Muzzy 100gr. 3 blades. I think most guys tend to aim too far forward on turkey. Really study the anatomy. I hate mechanical heads for big game but think they would be devestating for turkey. I have always stayed with the muzzys because they shoot perfectly through the mesh windows of my blinds. A lot of mechanicals wont.

I have killed a fair amount with the Rage 2 blade and they are devestating on them. As fletch said they would not be good for shooting through mesh. I dont use a blind so that I dont worry about. This season will find me with the NAP bloodrunners!

Any big mechanical will work. For turkeys, the bigger the better IMO. Like others have said as well, people tend to aim at the wrong spot on turkeys. Really study the anatomy and next time you dress one out really pay attention to where the vitals are located.

Is it dumb of me to think if my broadhead can take down a deer it most definitely should take down a Turkey?!

Nah it definitely can. I've just been told you're better off with a large broadhead 'cause their vitals are so small. This spring will be my first time trying to take a tom with a bow (gun hunted them for years).

Can't go wrong with NAP 2 blade bloodrunners. Best broadhead I've ever used. Works great for both deer and turkey.
