well really want to go Elk hunting. Id love to kill one with a bow but a rifle would be probably be the smarter choice due to my experience with a bow and would hate to throw the money in the toilet becuase of skills. But i would consider it depending on how much i improve in before a possible trip in 2011 or 12 that my friend, his dad, and myself are trying to plan and workout. my friend and his father want to go out west and hunt also and they are the only ones i know that would really even consider going. i want to hunt in the mountains and the brush, like a Colorado terrain possibly, because i think it would be more of an experience. They are set killing an antelope or mule deer in Wyoming and do the hunts where your taking atleast a 200 yard shots becuase the father knows a work associate that does it every few years and recommends its. they are into still hunting and using rifles where i have found my love in bow hunting and will always love hunting with dogs, the rifles just arent my thing i dont get the excitement and fulfillment i do when an upclose kill. while i know i would have a great time doing the rifle hunt on the open country i just dont wanna spend the $1000's of $$$ if im not in it at heart all the way just to say i did it. i think i should stick to my guns even if it means we dont go out there. im just looking for some advice on how i should go about this???
I have been out 4 years in a row all DIY rifle hunts in south central Colorado. I love bow hunting but decided to try with a rifle just to get the feel of what it is like hunting the west. I have been lucky and killed 4 elk in 4 years and will be going back again this year. I think I am ready for a bow hunt or possibly a ML hunt and might set it up for 2011. My advice is to get into good shape because between the altitude and steep canyons the hunt is very difficult. Our first 2 years out there we rented a motel in a nearby town and hunted some private land that we had permisssion on and some pub lands. The past 2 years we stay at a cabin my hunting buddy bought and hunt some private and lots of pub lands. I wouldn't stay home if you get a chance to go whether it is rifle or bow. Just being out there is an experience and something I plan to do every year as long as I can physically do it.
