How do you all go about it??? I need some help/tips/pointers... I recently moved to a new location in ohio and don't know anyone around the area. There are a lot of farms and woods around the surronding area that have great potential, but here is my dilema... I don't know anyone, and I did a little research (county website) to find property close to where I live that I think would be good hunting land. I was thinking that after this season is over I would just start going down the check list and stopping and asking. I just always feel akward going to someone I don't know, introducing myself and asking to hunt their property....a) I feel they probably already have someone that hunts there b) they don't know me so automatic no. Does anyone have the "golden key" to getting in to places...lol... Any suggestions/tips/input will be appreciated. Thanks everyone. Oh btw...Knox County OH is where I be...
simply advertise, go to local archery shop and put something on a bulletin board many people need others to fill a lease or need a hunting buddy. there is want ad section of your local paper.... put in a ad, people need money and i cant think of people need it more then local farmers, some trade work for hunting rights, some cash i overheard a customer of mine was working on his barn, i took a chance and stopped by and helped him, given it was all day but later when i would not take money for the help he did not no what to think,, about a week later he stopped by the store and took me to lunch more like a ride to the farm and gave be a grand tour and rights to hunt anytime i like, we have been friends ever since.
Get yourself a copy of Joe Brooks book "Year 'Round Trophy Whitetails". He documents a proven method for acquiring permission that I've used many times. It works.
If you can find that way to get permission from one farmer, it's very likely that it will open doors for you on other land. If it's anything like out here, almost all farmers know the other farmers in the surrounding area and can always put in a good word for you. Just make sure that you explain yourself, give them a good history on you as a person and you as a hunter. Make sure that you explain that you aren't going to extend the invitation to your friends and also explain how you are new to town and are trying to meet new people and get new contacts. Alot of people I know who have land and allow other hunters on it are willing to do so as long as if they know their property and families aren't in danger. As ultramax stated, try to find something that you can do for the farmer in return for you hunting on their land.
