What do "YOU" consider a trophy buck? For me and my area, anything over 120", would probably go on my wall.
For me, I won't shoot anything smaller than a mature 140" deer. I won't shoot a buck that I don't plan on getting a shoulder mount of anymore, so I reckon thats my definition of "trophy"
My goal is a 130"+. That's a pretty good deer for my area. I can't promise you I won't screw up and shoot something smaller, and if I do I will proudly display it with my other bucks.
In my opinion any deer shot in my area is a "trophy" seeing the population is so low, we only get one antlered deer tag and no antlerless, and mature bucks are few and far between.
A trophy buck on the public land I hunt here in Alabama would be 120 or over. Sad but true. There have been some 140-150 class deer killed around here but not often.
Sadly in my Area 100+ would be a trophy for bow. 120+ would be a trophy for rifle. Sadly the masses of hunters around here in Northern New York are happy with any bit of bone that walks by. Not to mention the boys with the "red its dead and brown its down" mentality here....
I know a buck is a shooter when he walks in and I don't have to wonder if he's big enough. If I have to think about it, I let him walk. I try holding out for 4 1/2 year olds but that doesn't always happen
Last year 150 plus. This year 135 - 145. I guess scouting and reality of what I am finding decides it for me. I suppose I could hold out for a 200 class deer. That's it... a 200 class buck or I am eating my tag. I also plan on winning the lottery without buying a ticket. I like impossible odds. :p Tim
Idk what a trophy is for me yet haven't really had a chance to shoot a buck so for my fist anything will do but that big one would be nice
This is pretty much exactly the rule I have adopted, from experience that break point seems to be around 130" or 4.5+ yo deer.
Last year I was letting 120's-130's walk waiting for 140+ or 4 1/2 year olds. this year I've decided that with the addition of my youngest son and limited sits I will be very happy with a 3 1/2 year old thats in 130's. but we'll see if that holds true since I saw a pair of 170's that live on non huntable land and use the tiny property we hunt to travel to the ag fields across the street that are also non huntable
