I was in ****'s Sporting Goods the other day and saw they were on sale for $6 so I grabbed a couple! Just wondering if you guys have used them in your mineral sites and if they were successful? Just curious when you start your sites back up?
Dang that's a good deal!! The cheapest I've ever seen is 12.99 Whenever I've used them they've always tore them up. I don't run too many mineral sites because of the cost, but I have a feeder i put up after season and put a mineral block up next to it. We typically use the trophy rock.
Is there any specific way you set up a mineral lick? Tie it down, or put it in a depression, ect? I've never used one, but was thinking of putting one out.
I've always just tossed mine out. It takes them a good while to go through one. by the time they get done with it, there will be a pretty goood size hole in the ground.
I was also curious how long (roughly) it takes for the local deer to find and start using a lick? Are they leery at first, or do they get right to it?
Just depends. I've had deer using them the first evening after placing them. I like the trophy rocks but generally mix my own mineral as it's cheaper and has better antler mineral content. The few TR's I have out get hammered.
My last hunt I saw a beat up lick block in the middle of the field where I shot the photos of my sunset lady. I paused at this.. thought it may be just a regular lick ... range cattle. I think I may get a bunch of these mentioned here and spread em out in my area. Interesting idea and even though I like the catch em where they are approach it could be cool to donate some minerals either way. Thanks, going to check this stuff out.
I've got a Rack Rock (Deer Cane) that I'm going to put out tomorrow. I'm on Public land, so I'll put it inside a thicket where there's no worry of somebody disrupting the site. From everything I'm reading, all of these "mineral rocks" have about the same ingredients, mostly salt. Is is OK to put my cam up right away at the site, or is that too much going on too soon?
A lot of people say its basically just a salt block. I have used a good amount of differnt types of salt blocks and sure they have worked but last year was the first time I used trophy rock. After using it last year I will be using them for a while. Had the best results I have ever had. Here in Michigan I typically put them out around March-April time nothing wrong with putting them out early. You can just put one out on the ground and do fine. What I like to do is put it on a ild stump or at least put it on a couple short logs just to kinda keep it off the ground. The thing with just tossing it on the ground the deer will end up digging a hole and then the rock sits in the hole, when it rains and water fills up the hole it tends to make the rock erode faster. For $6 you got a killer deal
I use the trophy rock and like them if you put them in spots where youve had one theyll find it fast or in regular travel corridors but if its new to the area or in a new spot id give it a week or two for them to find it i also use bags of bb square in front of cameras and around plots they find that so fast cause the smell i love that stuff i get my best pics and it keeps the deer there we stop using it two weeks before season starts.
I would stick to a more natural thing. If there is no old stumps just find a couple good size branches set them side by side and put it on top of those. Just to put it a couple inches off the ground
Yep which IMO is the problem. I will stick with a product that doesn't have salt as the primary ingredient. Like oh... say Monster Raxx. To optimize antler growth as well as proper supplementation for lactating does you want a 2:1 ratio of calcium and phosphorus as your first ingredients. Salt is important, but too much salt is no bueno. Deer will hit ANY product with salt, they crave it... but personally, for me, I like to know that what they are consuming is as beneficial to the herd as absolutely possible. Just my .02 FWIW
It's in a granular form. Salt is good at attracting deer but only makes up .5% of antlers. I'd rather have a mineral that contains more calcium and phosphorus along with being a great attractant. Monster Raxx | Trophy Deer Minerals & Attractants
I need to be more educated on this I guess. Not sure how you get the to the 2:1 ratio with Monster Raxx based on the their own data. http://www.monsterraxx.com/resources/themes/standard/images/guaranteed-analysis.jpg It intrigues me that they break down salt and sodium into two different categories when at least 40% of salt is sodium. If you add these two ingredients together it is a much as 30% of the contents. That's still a heck of a lot better then Trophy Rock at a whopping 96% If you add up all the contents less the trace minerals it comes out to around 50%. What is the other 50% in Monster Raxx? Some secret sauce??? Don't get me wrong I am going to keep using it because it just works! :p
