For the last two weeks my bow hunting has taken a back seat to other things. Also, due to daylight ending sooner I am only able to hunt weekends now. I really want to hit it hard again this weekend as I will be out of town all next weekend and won't be able to hunt. That only leaves one more huntable weekend till our gun season here in Wisconsin. The kids are going trick or treating on Sunday afternoon and I have always gone with them in the past. This year I would like to be in treestand. What do you guys do? Is it a must attend for your family?

I would like to be there but with so much other things on my plate I am running out of times to hunt the best time of the year and I am really hungry to kill a deer. Am I off base to go hunting?

It's trick or treating... not Christmas for heavens sake.

It really depends on how your wife feels about it. If she doesn't mind the kids probably won't care whether it is you or her taking them out. I have always taken my daughter but I do know she wouldn't mind if I went hunting and my wife took her. She would be excited about the trick or treating and about the possiblity of me bringing home a deer. She likes to help (watch and talk) while I skin and butcher them.

Wife knows how much killing a deer means to me. She knows I've stuck a lot of time into it and I desperately want to bring home a deer after getting skunked on both gun and bow last year and have not seen a deer yet this year. She loves the venison and would rather see the family eating venison than beef any day.

She also would like me to be there (trick or treating) as well. I think she is as hung up decision wise as as I am.

Due to my recent struggles, I can tell she is at the point that she thinks I am not going to get anything because that is the news I have been bringing home since 2008. I know better..... eventually I'll get this ship heading in the right direction.

The other part that sucks is there is a stand that I've purposely left alone for this time of year. I would hunt it Saturday but the wind is only right for it on Sunday which makes this hard. If I don't hunt it Sunday, it won't happen till the middle of November.

The easy answer would be to simply kill something Saturday and I won't have this dilemma.

Can you hunt from sun-up to around 3pm on Sunday? That will give you some great time on stand and also allow you to attend Halloween.

There is no hunting on Sundays here in VA so I am not forced to make the decision. If it makes you feel better I am missing Saturday hunting and also large parts of Monday and Tuesday due to some serious obligations. ughhhhhh

Brad, also...you have put in the work this year. What ever happens, happens in your deer woods. You deserve to kill something this year and I know it will happen sooner than you think. BEST of luck buddy.

Taking my daughter trick or treating Isn't a must for me to be there. Her mom has no problem with me going hunting as she knows Halloween has been one of the few days In the deer hunting season that I like to be In the woods. If the weather would suck then yes I'd go with too but by no means Is It a must for me.

I'd skip the hunting to take my daughter trick or treating. She's only young once.

    Brett,

I want to hunt the Hwy144 property so I need to be dropped off and picked up due to no parking at or near the access. It is not a good morning hunt spot for this reason because I don't think the wife and kids would be crazy about getting up a 5am to drop my butt off to hunt. I've actually considered rigging up a bike somehow to get all my gear on it and biking to the access point. It sounds a little crazy though. :o

So if I did that I probably would not be able to get there till 8-9am till 3pm. I know anything can happen this time of year but it sure would suck getting up a 3pm knowing the best is yet to come.

Brad, go with your gut. If your wife is cool with it, GO FOR IT! It will be a prime day. Send her some flowers today. :)

Obviously going to be some different opinions here. No matter how my wife felt about it, I like seeing my kids in their costume and taking my kids trick or treating. For me, its just one evening out of about 8 weeks I can hunt. I hunt the morning and sometimes into the afternoon, but I'm always home at least an hour before dark. No deer could make me feel better after seeing the look on my kids' faces if I told them I wasn't going. Just my preference.

When they get older, I'm sure that will change. It won't be cool to have Dad along anymore. Until then, hunting won't be a reason I miss it.

I see a lot of guys referencing their wife, but what about how the kids feel about it?

I'm taking friday off work and hunting all day, and hunting all day saturday. So that I can go trick or treating with the kids sunday night. I would have liked to have hunted sunday morning through the noon hours, but we'll see what happens?

I'm taking off Friday afternoon from (I think...haven't confirmed with the boss yet) so I can drive up and hunt friday night through Sunday morning. Then come home Sunday night for Trick-or treat thing.

The bike idea works!! I have some public land near my house. I bike in with my climber on my back and I also have a B.O.B trailer for my bike...works awesome! The B.O.B. is a little pricey, but I had no options years ago when I bought it, now some companies make a copy of that design for cheaper.

It is a one-wheel trailer (not like a kid-hauler trailer).. here is the B.O.B with suspension

Chomping at the bit ! I've only hunted 2 times so far this year... once with my 5 yr. old daughter and once with my 3 year old boy.
Got my stands done in august & sept.
Been devoting my time to family & work ( & shooting / trail camera stuff when the opportunity presents itself :).
I hunt where I live and I'm lucky enough to be married to someone who understands my passion.
Everyone has been preparing and knows whats coming.. Daddy will be MIA for the next couple weeks.
Come Friday It's time to hunt!

Can you do both? Does your community or a near by one have safe Halloween events? I know they used to do it here at the mall, and still may. You may could take them on Saturday since it's not the right wind, then the wife could on Sunday. Not sure if it would work but could be an option? Kids would be happy getting twice the candy.
