While doing some scouting on the land we lease last year, I noticed a new line of scrapes along an untouched part of the property. Recently researching tri pod stands, and with the field being standing corn for early season, I thought I would put a tri pod in the corn, to watch over the edge of the woods(there is the decent gap between the woods and the first rows of corn). I also have the idea of removing a few stalks along the edge for an easier shot. If I was to put a stand just inside the woods, I'm afraid I'll find that it's not owned by the farmer we lease the land from. A month ago I put out a trail cam to watch the edge, which I'll be checking soon. Any thoughts? Thanks!
I hunt the same type of a set up and I set up in the woods. I like the back round blockage that the trees give. I have stands set on both the East and West sides of the fields and use them as morning and night stands. I'd check with the farmer or talk to the land owner, if it isn't him, and try and be set up on the edge of the woods.
Thanks, I'll be going up there in a week to check cards, maybe I'll find a tree to set up on. We have a total of 5 stands already up on the property so it gives me quite a few options
This is the property we hunt, everything to the left of the house which you see on the right of the photo.
Always good to have options. Go with the woods setup. I rarely set up on the edge. I usually go inside at least 20-30 yards.
Agree with Jeepster. When I say set up on the edge, I mean depending on the tree position, I try to be in the limbs for cover, which usually means just off the edge of the field but far enough back to block any movement and my outline from being skylined.
That is something that I determine by the terrain and cover around the fields or where I am in the woods.
I will try and remember to take photos next week when I go, give a better idea of the new spot. There is also a crab apple tree I wanted to post up by along a different edge of the corn that I often kick deer from.
I've shot way more deer under apple trees eating, than while eating acorns, alfalfa, clover, corn, soybeans and anything in a food plot, combined!
Maybe if you didn't hunt with deer and apple trees in the same pen that wouldn't be the case............................
It's all good Bowsage. We're friends. If we aren't ribbing each other there is something definitely wrong.
Haha I've seen some of those penned deer, like the Apple Creek Ranch, beasts! Also, have you guys looked into Hunter's Crate? Just joined a year membership and got real excited!
