WOW, I just saw this on ESPN, I know nothing of the details. I do know what i have read and what we have discussed on here, but it appears that he is gone.
Coach is the fall guy. I would be shocked if someone higher than him didn't know anything about this.
I gave it a very small percentage that he was ever going to coach again for the Buckeyes. Not surprised.
But in a way, he should be. IF he had direct knowledge of the wrong doing, he is liable for his team. That's why he signed a contract to make the big bucks.
Could you imagine if the CEO of your company failed to report say an EEOC complaint on purpose? That person would be fired immediately for failure to disclose. Tressel is in the same boat for failure to disclose.
I hope the media and every fake buckeye fan out there is happy with what they have done. Tressel is irreplaceable as a mentor to these kids. It is easy to sit in the cheap seats and lob insults at a man you know nothing about. For everyone who knows what kind of man Tressel truly is this is a sad, sad day. The kids are the ones paying the price because of this media witch hunt that has taken place. It isn't about the wins and losses, but Tressel leading these kids to manhood. I just wish all of these media types who have bashed Tressel are judged as feverishly as they judged Tressel. Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I felt like I got kicked in the gut when I read the news.
I don't know much about Jim Tressel the man but I really don't need to. He covered up a scandal and knowingly played players who should have been inelgible. Even former OSU players like Kirk Herbstreit, Chris Spielman, and Robert Smith have been highly critical of Tressel's actions and have questioned how realistic it would be that he remain the coach there after what he did. It appears he was pressured to resign so it is really more of a firing than a resignation. Tressel has knowbody to blame for this but himself...pure and simple
Scott, you know I am as big a college football fan as there is, and I roll with BAMA so I have seen the darker side...but Tressel could be the second coming and that still would not mitigate the fact he lied. Unless you have some other info about the situation, he learned of something wrong going on and hid it. I think small coming forward was bad for him because it made it appear that starters got second, third and fourth chances and back ups got suspensions. Remember, I am not versed on the situation at all except what you guys have said on here, but it appears the university was not wiling to go any further. On a side note, you already named your interim coach, and it appears early rumors of chasing myer may be true.
Picked this up from an article written a month ago. "NCAA officials have accused Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel of an ethics breach for hiding violations connected to seven current and former players who sold awards and gear earned as Buckeyes, according to a Notice of Allegations school officials received Friday. The notice, obtained by The Columbus Dispatch, does not cite school officials for failure to monitor or failure of institutional control violations. The absence of those phrases shows that the NCAA’s issues likely focus on Tressel, and not the OSU athletic compliance department nor department leadership, including athletic director Gene Smith. The notice also indicates that the NCAA could consider Ohio State as a repeat offender, which would increase the penalties the school could suffer. Past violations included former quarterback Troy Smith receiving $500 from a booster and former men’s basketball coach Jim O’Brien giving $6,000 to a recruit. Ohio State officials will appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions at an Aug. 12 hearing in Indianapolis. The Dispatch reported that 28 schools have been accused of the ethical breach that Tressel faces. Of the 13 head coaches involved in those cases, one remains in her position. The others resigned or were dismissed, in part because of the dishonesty. Seven current and former Buckeyes received better than $9,400 in cash for the awards and gear, including jerseys, championship rings and the gold pants charms earned for victories over Michigan. Edward Rife, a local tattoo parlor owner, bought the items and displayed some in his shop. Players also received more than $500 worth of free tattoos. One player received a $2,450 discount on a car purchased from Rife and an $800 loan from Rife to make repairs on the vehicle." I understand what you are saying Scott about Tressel being a mentor to the young men at Ohio State, but the NCAA does not care about that when they make their decision to investigate. It is merely a factual case brought against an institution or person. And in this case it was a legitimate decision on the NCAA's part to investigate Tressel KNOWINGLY violating the stipulations of his contract and NCAA bylaws. Other sources: "Tressel knew of allegations of improper benefits to Pryor and five other players as early as April 2010 — at least seven months before the university found out from a U.S. Attorney." He got what he earned Scott. Plain and simple. He could have manned up and turned in those players prior to the 2010 season. They would have faced suspensions and the program would have moved on. His career would have moved on as well. I am not judging him as a bad man, but he made a bad decision and it cost him.
I don't see what the big deal is...........he is a liar and a cheater who lost his job because of it. Happens every day..............even to nice guys.
Chris Spielman said some wonderful statements today about the situation, if I was TSIO I would hire him as my next coach.
Hell my boss, a 20 year veteran was fired here in the last two weeks. He was told not to do something, he did, and was fired. Done, career over. Stick with the policy and procedure.
Cover of SI story that did him in. Should be released tomorrow. http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/p/26339702/SIcom-story-on-Tressel-Ohio-State.aspx
Looks like Pryor is under more investigations accoring to MSN...could be old news as I am not up to speed. Looks like michigan could end up being the big winner in the TP sweepstakes in the end.
Yeah I wanted TP to be a wolverine, I was never so happy not to get what I wanted. From what I am hearing, this goes a little deeper then TP. I think Mark May said it best, if he would gotten an email about his backup QB he would have marched down to the compliance office and handed them the email himself.
Irregardless, the COACH deserved to be FIRED not given an opportunity to resign, considering his BLATANT and CALCULATED deceit. Remember, this guy was a former Athletic Director, so he was quite aware of the rules.... I disagree Gary, I think it's a GOOD day in Big Ten Football because a LIAR and CHEAT was held accountable!!! I'd rather lose with dignity than win as a cheater. AMEN Trevor, AMEN!!! ACCOUNTABILITY is the #1 thing required in that job, and he failed to have any. Calculated a lie and got caught. He didn't willfully admit to having known, he got TRAPPED in his lies. As a TRUE BUCKEYE FAN, more interested in the integrity of the program than the won/loss record, I see this as a GREAT DAY for the future of the program!!! Exactly!!! Scott, Quit being a fan of INDIVIDUALS and be a fan of the TEAM!!! If YOU were a TRUE Buckeye Fan, you'd see this as a step forward, a step towards starting over and running a program of EXCELLENCE AND INTEGRITY!!! Sad that so many people don't have PRINCIPLES enough to have looked past their "liking" of the coach to have demanded ACCOUNTABILITY from him. If you're wife cheats on you, but is really good at "cooking" and taking care of the kids, does that make the cheating okay??? Same situation as far as I'm concerned. Maurice Clarrett probably feels very VINDICATED tonight, and rightfully so.....
Chris Spielman on "Mike and Mike" this morning on ESPN Radio sounded a lot like me as far as the accountability thing. Glad there is someone out there that still has "PRINCIPLES." Now Gene Smith may be the next to go, and another "Good Riddance" because he was "100% behind" the LIAR of a coach. His "We support Coach Tressel 100%," and "Coach Tressel WILL be our coach this fall," statements just didn't sit right with me. The "coach" lied, cheated, and put the WHOLE university in a shameful position and has likely cost the school MILLIONS$$$$ in NCAA sanctions and very likely cost some scholarships at the university. All that and he was still supporting him??? No Thanks, let's get someone with the BALLS to do the RIGHT thing. Unfortunately, asking him to resign vs. FIRING him sends the WRONG message, and if I were one of the NCAA panel, I'd not see that in a favorable light. Yet I don't see the whole program in a favorable light, and I'm a fan, so I guess that means they may have a tough road ahead.
