Talk to him prior to getting things to a point of no return. Could be a simple misunderstanding.

Last year I got permission on a new piece of property, I asked and the couple clearly explained the land boundries (or so I had thought). So I parked where I had thought they told me on a lane off the dirt road, My son and I scouted the area and after a couple hours hung a camera and left the area. I was barely home when the cops called. I told them of my permission and the owners name. He said thats great but where you parked and enterred wasn't thier land, (this cop hunts the adjoining property..) Anyhow long story short apparently I misunderstood the owners explanation. I told the cop of my camera and that i'd have to go right back in and get it. He allowed me to do that and no further repercussions ensued.

So give the benefit of the doubt once anyhow!

No misunderstanding when it comes to trespassing. If you didn't ask, you have no right to be there...not to mention hunting out of season ?? No regards to the law...

    Turn him in

I totally agree with the above.

I always love the ethics of any man.. when another makes a mistake it's "let him hang".. when you make the mistake it's the plea of ignorance.

I agree w/trying to speak to the kid first and escalating if necessary for subsequent violations.

I agree. I once was a stupid teenager and thank God some folks were kind enough to scold me and give me a second chance.

I hunt where I want, when I want.

When you're this awesome, you can do that.

If I find them you bet I'm talking to them myself. If its someone I have already ran out I'm taking the sorry SOBs to jail. The particular farm I hunt now I have had sole permission and there is to be no one there at all. It took me 3 yrs but I have finally gotten the 4wheelers a little more under control. Im sure it helps when half the time Im there Im in my squad car!!!

I'm curious why no one has mentioned calling a Game Warden regarding the poaching. Sure it was a tree rat taken out of season. I bet there would be a lot more calls for the kid's head on a platter had that been a deer taken out of season. iId make the local warden aware. Also, is the woodlot clearly posted? If not I would make sure signs got put up. Since you know the kid from school talking directly to him wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Jeff I agree with you, but I struggle with why we all seem to hold deer(and deer hunters) to a higher standard. A guy kills 20 doves when the limit is 15, no one says a word. Kill a deer that goes untagged and everyone screams poacher. I'm guilty of the same mindset of turning people in on the big stuff yet letting the smaller things slide.

As for the kid, talk to him before you call johnny law. Get the kid in trouble and you might have problems of your own down the road.

What I typically do with trespassers Is If It's the 1st time I've caught them on my land (I should say my dad and brothers land) I'll worn them and tell them this will be the last time In a very stern manner and voice. Works all the time.;) If It happens again ****s going to hit the fan.

As for the squirrels being taken out of season I sure as hell am not going to make a fuss about It to a GW but I'd scare the trespasser In the process and tell the person that they are not In season so he better watch his P's and Q's from now on when It comes to coming on my land.

I agree. Try talking to him first. If that goes nowhere pursue your other options.
