I am curious as to what height everyone hunts deer from. I generally put my Lone Wolf Alpha hang on at about 17-20 feet. I am paranoid about not being high enough. What do you all think?
I just do whatever the situation calls for, if I have a stand in a creek I usually have it higher than I would if I was just in the open woods or a field edge. Usually anywhere from 15 to 30 feet from the base of the tree.
i like creeks b/c they hide your scent so you can really hang your stand around 10'-12' and it really is effective as far as scent goes. i hang mine for the view of the terrain like behind my house there is a deep ridge w/ a slough at the bottom and the transition trails line the ridges coming to and fro the bedding area. lots of oaks and poplars, hickorys too so there is feeding areas along the way that you need to see to be effective.
Depends on what the situation calls for, I have rarely been below 15-17 feet. I have hunted from as high as 35-38 feet. ( to the ground straight down)
Like others have said it really depends on the situation. I had a stand this last fall that I could stand at the base of and reach up and grab the base of the stand. It was tight quarters with a lot of cover and I had a lot of deer under 10 yards that had no clue I was there. Could have shot any of them. Then I also hunted out of a few trees that the base of the stand was up there 36-38ft.
I'm with everyone on this one. LOCATION and SITUATION. Also I like to know what the winds do around that area.
early in the season when there is lots of foliage i will hunt lower in the tree say 15 feet but the more leaves drop the higher i will go, in the rut my stands end up 22-25 at the stand base and very late season with little to no foliage your more likely to find me on the ground in a blind. I have two friends that hunt 30-40 feet and they kill alot of deer and say they never get winded but it's just to spooky for me.
I'm usually anywhere from 15'-25'. 25' seems to be my ceiling where I am comfortable. Any higher than that I don't feel safe. Ben, 38'?!?! I'd be hugging the tree for dear life at that height.
If landscape and foliage allow for it, I'm always from 20'-25' up. Sometimes landscape dictates I go higher, sometimes foliage dictates I stay lower.
with a climber, I'm at 20' usually. makes close shot harder, due to the angle. but high enough they don't smell/see you. Ladder stand is 17'. No issues with that height either.
