I have 2 hang on stands I use & I like to have steps go at least as high as the stand plus several "screw in steps" to use as handles until I am securely in my stand.

I prefer to step up to my platform, and I screw in another step behind the tree, higher than the stand for a handle while Im getting into the stand, and I also use this to hang my gear when Im sitting.

    Tree Steps

I prefer the steps go up high enough I can just step over onto mt stand. I am attaching a picture of what I like to do with mine.
