Valid point, in the woods, but especially in urban areas, where deer are a growing nuisance and a hazard. Because you're generally (not always) shooting downward, the stand affords an additional degree of safety. With a downward angled trajectory, the harvest of deer with a bow, in smaller urban parcels (as small as 1-2 acres), is offered in a growing number of areas. Though the details vary by municipality, the stand in essence, is regarded as additional safety measure by city leaders, and archery has become an increasingly acceptable means of deer population control in cities.

for me all i use is tree stands. up here in northern WI i hunt swamps and very small fields. this means that its pretty hard to stalk, crunching leaves, twigs, ext. i think its the terrain that you hunt that makes you use different tactics like stalking.

Thank you for the answers Gents very informative.

To answer a couple of the questions:

"why is bowhunting illegal over there?" No one really knows, there are various stories floating around from the member of parliament that was meant to sign them on as official weapons was ill on the day the bill got passed, to its not humane, or it was done to cut down on poaching.

Personally I think its because people don't understand what modern bows can do. I myself was anti the idea till I picked up a mates bow then I was hooked.

It is legal in France so its only a short hope over the channel to get my fix. I am planning in a trip stateside to stalk :) a whitetail haha.

"what rifle calibers are popular for hunting in England?"

I currently use a .243 and a .308, I will be getting a 6.5x55 and 300 win mag barrels for my Blaser shortly. 6.5x55 for the larger deer and the 300win mag for driven boar hunting in Europe.

The most common calibre over here is the .243 as that is the minimum deer legal calibre, as a result that is what the police try to push you to get. Firearms laws over here are bonkers.

I am not sure about the ballistics of a 30-30 but I remember reading somewhere that it is not deer legal!!

People have a stupid belief over here if you are not shooting a bullet doing mach 3 then it can't kill a deer.

Cool, learned something new today. Where do you plan on hunting in the US when you get a chance? And yes there is a lot of ignorance surrounding modern archery equipment and it's capabilities, even here.

Englishboy, do yall have anytype of sport with bows? Such as 3D archery tournaments, or are that not used period.

I heard that the reason it is illegal is because Robin Hood killed all the Kings deer!!:poke:

Seriously though, it blows my mind they are illegal to hunt with there. I can't think of a bow without thinking of Robin Hood and England. Welcome to the site, and good luck on all your hunting adventure this year! :)

It is way to "thick"in my kneck of the woods for stalking. Aside from not being able to see through all the folliage, there is no way move silently. Its way to easyto get busted.
