THey make some products that do the job easier, like a hand drill or use a cordless drill, but they are noisy. I have heard that the Cranford steps are the easiest to get in a tree, but I have not used them. To be honest, once I got myself a set of Lone Wolf climbing sticks, I have not screwed another step in a tree. If you are set on using screw in steps. Try starting the hole with your small bow hanger, then the hole will start better for the steps. Hope that helps.

There are gadgets out there to help you....for me...I ended up getting rid of all my steps...and buying EZY Climb steps from Cranford. They're a little more money, but they do start very easily....which is a big deal when you're 20 feet up trying to get them into a tree....

Bark bit will work. But what I do is just take a hard plastic tipped hammer. Hit it pretty good into the tree then start screwing. Holds a 275lb uncle for 5 years this way n no drills to mess with.
