On a particular farm I hunt, one of the only options for a tree stand is in a cedar tree. Does anyone have any pictures or experience hanging stands in cedars? I don't wanna ruin the tree by cutting away too many branches but I don't know how else to get up the tree. Its out in the open so cover is crucial. I know many have had great success hunting out of cedars but I really don't know how to go about hanging a stand in one.

Use a ladder or a ladder stand. You'll have to trim some branches or else do a lot of scratching.

That's what I figured. I'm thinking this tree just may be too full to put a stand in and I might get left on the ground again. I would only be able to see in one direction because the tree is so full.

Some of my best stands are in cedars..I just trim a small notch to climb thru and up. Sometimes its hard to find one that is big enough at the top :)

Do you use steps/sticks or just the branches? My stand would be very dense, similar to what you have here.

I just use the limbs ..to hang bow and everything. I can shoot almost everywhere except behind and to my right side ..just hang stand accordingly

I think I'm gonna have to give this a shot. I'm extremely weary about hanging a stand this late though, and in this particular spot because of the quality of bucks that I've seen on it in the past this time of year.

    Most are not this small..
Another bonus, some of these have small berries if you will ..growing on them. I will pick a bunch of these, smash them up..makes a great cover scent

I know what berries you're talking about. I'll give it a shot this week and let you know how I make out.

If you can..ride a 4- Wheeler or drive your truck right up to the tree..turn your radio on and trim it out ..run a chainsaw. This sounds crazy but it has worked for me in the past. Better than sneaking in and getting busted buy deer up in the tree while working. Around here anyway, i guess they just think I'm a farmer ..good luck

My dad has a buddy down in Arkansas that has killed a lot of deer while out cutting trees. I also killed a doe several years ago while my buddies dad was sawing about 100 yards from my stand.

I have had nice bucks come in while cutting when I have been hanging stands also. I like to use the limbs to climb the cedar trees as well.

I love hanging stands in cedar trees, the only bad part is when it gets windy. I have cut a strip of branches the entire length of the tree in order to get my ladder stick on the tree, and the tree never showed any signs of dying or anything.

I have done this several times..watch a nice buck 100 yds from my stand
.after the hunt and stalk back to truck ..i go get another stand drive in, do my work with truck running or radio on ..then go get cleaned back up and snuck back within the hour..started seeing deer immediately ..mind you this will only work if the deer are use to people coming in and out of these spots..
Also works along the river with a boat

Well I did it. So far it seems to be awesome. The stand is about 22' up in a big cedar at the bottom of a field edge. I think I might have cut away too much cover though. I used a combination of screw in steps and branches to climb up. It only took about a half hour total. I was very surprised. This is my first hang-on stand. My others are ladders and climbers.

I'm in the tree, my buddy and pup are on the ground.

This is how I do it for any pine tree. Usually I trim the notch on the back side of the tree to give me cover when climbing up.

I used to use the branches, but only if it's a big tree and the branches are bigger than my wrist. I use my sticks now.

Thanks guys. I'm really hoping it plays out. It's a trick spot because the predominant wind is a W wind and the deer come from the east. But when things go well, they go real well. I shot my first buck right under this tree just after opening day last year and I know there are several other bucks that use this area early in the season.

Nice set-up Chris. You are a little exposed up there, but you should be fine unless all of the deer around there are looking up into the trees! You should have some beautiful scenery from that position. Can't wait to see your harvest pic with that tree in the background. Best of luck!
