We followed the Tree Coy idea started by the Drurys and installed one in a hay field by one of our elevated blinds. The field was getting heavy traffic from deer before the installation, but they were centered around a chicory/clover plot located in the corner of the field. Were pretty happy with the first week of results. 3 different 3 year old bucks visited and freshened up the mock, as well as a few younger bucks and plenty of does. Only a matter of time before the mature bucks show up.

Basically we put a tree in an open hay field with low branches so they would start scraping under it. Used an auger.

All you need to do is put a piece of 3” PVC pipe in the ground about about 2 ft long. Then every season you can put a tree in the exact location. Of course you will want to put a cover on the pipe when it is not in use so it doesn’t fill with debris. The tree should be alive when you cut and place in the pipe. This is a relatively old concept that works in a lot of wide open spaces. The tree will also act as a sign post rub over time during each season.
