I bought a new pair of Meindl Perfekt Extreme hunting boots and am wondering if I should treat them, because they have Gore-tex in them. I'm reading mixed thoughts on it online. Some say it will clog the pores of the Gore-tex and others say to use a product like Ninwax. The last pair of Meindls I owned I did not treat them when they were new. After about a year of hard use, I sprayed them with a silicone waterproofer. I did this once a year for about 5 years and they never leaked once.

    What would you do?

I like to treat leather with obenoufs. It's a natural product to protect the leather. Won't hurt the goretex. Goretex will be naturally warmer then plain leather because it doesn't breathe well.

I also read about people using Obenoufs. Thanks.

I use a product called Norvegen it comes in liquid or paste. I use in on my fire boots, it will make your boot waterproof it also stands up to class a foam that would normally destroy leather.

I have used Saddle Butter for over 20 years. I treat my leather boots once a year with it and they look like the day I bought them and never leak. All natural. Just another option.

Discovered two things about my new boots yesterday. They're actually nubuk, not leather, so I won't be treating them. Treating them will turn them into leather and they don't need to be treated at this point. They also have a rockband around them and all of the products mentioned above will deteriorate the adhesive that bonds the rubber adhesive to the nubuk.

So I picked up a new pair of the regular Perfekt Hunters yesterday. I read everything I could about treating and decided to give them two liberal doses of Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP. It did darken the boot a bit and they no longer have the brushed look, but I've read that you can bring that back with a brass bristle brush. I don't really mind the look now though so I'll just wear them as is.

Funny...I just treated my Lowa Tibet Nubuck leather boots the other day. I used Nixwax as it is water based, not oil based. Does not soften the leather and is supposed to be safe for Gore Tex. They also have a product designed for Nubuck but I just used the regular.

I emailed Lowa specifically about the types of waxes to use and they responded with this.
