Just wondering what you guys think how far deer will travel to eat in rut and other times what do y'all think thanks NELZ
The books claim that does have a 1 square mile range and bucks will expand their range to about two miles during the rut.
I actually remember reading a study that showed a deer that they tracked (collared) actually travelled 16 miles in a 24 hour period. May be a rare case, but they can go that far obviously. It was either a 2.5 or 3.5 year old buck that they tracked. Older more mature bucks have a smaller range, as they are dominant in that area and claim does in the immediate vicinity. Have read that less mature bucks are known to wander farther during rut. I imagine it's in search of an area where they are more dominant and less challenged for does.
My neighbor had a large, young buck on camera, 154 inch 3-4 year old. The exact buck was shot by someone I know about 1.5-2 miles away (as the crow flies). That is my only first hand experience.
As posted above. Young bucks 1.5-3.5 will travel great distances because they are forced out of an area by a more mature/bigger deer. BUT it all depends on you buck doe ratios. If you have crazy high doe pop, then the buck won't go far. Because they don't need to. There is plenty of tail to chase at home.
I believe.......non rut deer live in an area 1/2 -1 mile square. Older buck less than that. During the rut a buck could go 20 miles or more.
Depends on the area I suppose. Blade, a buck I've been following, is seen year round on cameras that are two miles from each other. Who knows how far he goes when the rut kicks in. He's 5 or 6.
The buck in my avatar was on camera all summer last year almost 2 miles from my property. He showed back up at my place right before the season opened. At least it wasn't the other way around. He was on my trail cameras a couple of times a week throughout the season until after Nov. 17th. Then I put him in my avatar.
Thanks guys I hunt a small block of woods and I have seen about 3 average size bucks and was wondering if there were more out there
