Any trappers out there? Looking to get into trapping. Not sure why other than it seems cool and something else to do. From what I understand so far (as of yesterday) you don't just throw a trap out there and hope for the best . Apparantely theres some things involved. How does one get started in trapping. Also, I have all kinds of critters roaming around to play with at the golf course (beavers, fox, muskrats, skunks,etc....)

I started trapping 32 years ago. I have not trapped much for the last 10 years or so, but my youngest son is now interested in learning and I am really excited to hit it hard this year. I just got a new dozen 280's to add to my collection of traps and will first start by teaching him how to degrease and dye and wax new traps. I think I am more excited to trap this year than bowhunt. It really is a lot of fun. We will run a lot of 220's, 280's, some 110's and some footholds. I use a lot of bucket sets for 'coons because they are quick to set and effective. There is a lot of really good information on the internet about trapping. Check with your state trappers association for a website.
When I was a kid I had the local fur buyer come out and get me started by showing me how to make a few sets. There was no interent back then, but I started getting the magazine Fur-Fish-Game and it was a lot of help. I also ordered a few trapping books that were advertised in the back of that magazine and learned a lot from them. See if you can find a local trapper through the trappers association to let you tag along on a trapline to learn. I would be glad to answer any questions through PM also. Good luck and enjoy!

I thought GregH was our resident trapper.

At any rate... plan on spending a lot of money and having to work through a lot of confining laws in NY. I trapped as a kid.... but then it was anything goes. If you're looking to do coyotes, foxes and all that.... you got to sterilize your traps, buy this foul smelling lure etc etc. Then you got to hope you don't catch your neighbors dog. LOL Gregs your man.

It was quite entertaining for a long while, then when Jeff's ego out grew the room then he got a bit testy.

It turned out that Jeff brought his WWF skills to UFC fight, an the results were quite predictable, entertaining yes, but also predictable.

Going to be my 1st year at trapping as well. I've been reading and watching videos on youtube which has helped a lot. Good luck.

I highly recommend going to a trapping convention and watching the seminars. It's one thing to read about a set, it's entirely another to be there and watch and be able to ask questions. There's also oodles of stuff for sale, new and used. Lots of homemade things that are pretty slick too.

Even with the bodygrip traps, there are little tricks with the triggers to catch sneaky things like mink or to avoid catching little critters (like muskrats in beaver traps).

Many states have trapper education classes you have to take before getting a license. NY is one of those states. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9191.html#Trapper

    Here's NY's state assoc. http://www.nystrappers.org/

I trapped my first coons and opossum early this year - it was a lot more fun than I thought it'd be. Tougher too.

I use the duke dogproof traps. They are pretty slick!
