IMHO 2 wrongs don't make a right... In this case I know a lot of states have the theory what you take into the woods comes out with you when hunting on public land.

No permanant tree stands, no trail cams etc... So basically when you leave something out there your basically saying you may not see it again... i.e DNR will remove anything they find... Should they, or another hunter will take it.

Now saying all that I personally wouldn't take a trailcam a treestand or anything like that....

It's wrong to take anything that doesn't belong To you IMHO, it's also asking for trouble like this when you do when your not suppose to...

1 reason not to take a trailcam on publicland... What if it was placed there by DNR? lol you never know now do you?

There is no fine line. If the OP or anyone else can't see it than your moral compass is broke, period. I hope someone fixes it for you one day.

It takes a lot for me to post on this site but this is a time I feel I need too. I always believed that hunters were a brotherhood, here to fight against the antis and anyone else. But being a public land hunter and having 2 trail cams and a lone wolf climber stolen I realize that trusting in my fellow hunter was not the smartest thing to do. Hunting where I do is not easy by any means, its an hour drive there and then another 45 minute walk back in, so you can see why I felt my equipment was safe. That and the belief that if another hunter came across it he would realize that it was hard to get it there and walk away. Well that was 10 years ago and I have learned not to trust anyone, anymore for any reason at all and that's truly sad. But I got to thank you BRVRY for letting me into the mind of a thief because I always wondered what one was thinking during this process. I truly hope the guilt you feel will make you think twice next time and maybe pass it along to anyone else you know who may be thinking this way. I don't know why you feel justified because you're turning the camera on when you take it back? YOU STILL STOLE IT!! And if you're reasoning for taking it was to see what was on it, why not just take the card as if that wouldn't be bad enough. And just like cls74 what if he thinks think its already gone after going back when you took it? I would truly hope you learn from this mistake.

Life is a lesson. Hopefully you learned one here. You're initial instincts were wrong, but I think you see that now. Learn and move on and better yourself.

Lot of inconsistencies here also. First, you say (after getting your butt chewed) that you will return it the next day. Then in a later post you said you returned it within a few hours. Also, how do you know the trail hasn't been on since the 18th? Trying to justify yourself on the forum is freaking weak, the bottom line is you are a thief. You stole something that wasn't yours, whether you "wanted to see what's on it" or doubt the owner will be MISSING his $70 trail cam. Your dad needs to take you to the woodshed and throw you a beating and teach you some life lessons kid.

I can't begin to tell you how many camera's, blinds, and stands I've walked by on public and the thought NEVER ONCE occurred to me to take them. Some of us only have public land to hunt, it is not wrong to think you should be able to trust your fellow hunter to not be a low life thief. Plain sight or not, public land or not, the fact that you took it says a lot about your character.

Saying folks here are ignorant or wrong to chastise you shows your age/own ignorance level. You cannot justify a theft. Yes we all make mistakes when we are young, but stealing is always wrong, regardless of your age.

Also if you really wanted to "just check out the pictures" you would have just taken the card, not the whole camera. So stop saying that is why you took it. You took it, felt guilty, and started trying to rationalize your actions. I hope you hold good to your word and return(ed) it with a note and really take stock in your actions. That still doesn't make the theft right, but it's a step in the right direction. You seem young and hopefully you learn from this.

After saying all that I still feel this was possibly a troll post and we all fell for it :) .

Not to mention in his original post he said he was "thinking about looking at it" when in fact he had already stolen it.

Did he learn? Very doubtful, the highlighted above really shows his true thought processing. Denial with a bit of justification that while he steals, he doesn't steal all the time. The private vs public comment is no different than saying "I don't break into people's cars in their driveway or near their home, I only do it in public parking areas and mall parking lots".

A few on here said they'll never take one but might moon it or whatever, so he'll go back and pose in front of it. And then to top it off, an admitted thief tries to flip the blame and switch himself to an "accused" thief.

In all honesty, it reminds me of that kid from last year that was playing several different forums for free gear. Maybe he was thinking if he told this story someone would say take it back and they'll send him one they have laying around.

Can mods/admins do a ISP address check?

I hope someone takes what you have, plays with it a bit, and thinks about returning it...
    But maybe they don't.
Taking someone's stuff is a good way to get locked up genius!

Sorry, I don't really know "internet forum" jargon... Is a ''troll'' post just something to get us all riled up for no reason?

I don't think he was a troll.... He was looking for someone to tell him it was ok to be a thief. Obviously, that didn't happen.
