I have 4 Moultries. They are the old GameSpy models, but they still get the job done. If money was no object, I'd have the Reconyx, but I would be completely happy upgrading to some newer Moultrie's for next year.
I just have never spent the money on a game camera. I need to, I just haven't done it. Anyone got one they aren't using anymore that they'd be willing to part with?
Some great deals to be had on many of the smaller units these days. The new Bushnell can be had for like $189(batteries and SD card not included, 2 yr warranty). But ny far the best deals I have come across are here: http://www.outdooressentialsllc.com/dlcC2.html DLC Covert II's can be had at the above site for $419(1 year warranty), That includes: 2-cameras, 1-remote, 4-2g Memory cards, 16-AA batteries, and free UPS. They also have 1 camera deals.
Jeff, one of the major reasons that I love my Reconyx is simply that it is a much better built camera. I can't stand a camera that is unreliable and thats the reason I decided to drop the coin (which I will gladly say that the Reconyx are way too expensive). I wanted a camera that I was confident in, a unit that I know will do its job every time I set it out. To me there is nothing more frustrating than checking a camera in a great location to find that it only snapped a couple of photos when the cam should have taken hundreds of photos. If I am going to go through the work involved in putting a camera out, I want a photo of every single animal that passes by!
Cuddeback Capture flash. $200, awesome quality day/night photos and a 1 second trigger speed...what more could you ask for?
we've got two, a moultrie D40 we picked up last year and a Stealthcam IR... the moultrie takes better pics but doesn't have IR capability so at night it uses a flash, but it can reach out pretty far with that flash, i'd estimate clarity out to about 50-75ft...
Over all I've been happy with my Leaf River, but I'm going to check out a Scoutguard for my next camera. I like the compact size, and it look like it takes good quality photos both day and night.
If your using the Moultrie 3.1...then you can buy a slighty upgraded version of that cam (its called a D-40) for around $90 now. Its junk IMO though. Very blurry pictures even though its said to be a 4.1 MP. There are alot of good cams for under $200 now.
Totally agree with Caleb. I have a D-40 and not very happy with it. It captured pictures but they were all blurry. Even ones taken just feet from the deer that weren't moving. Every picture had a haze round them. I would invest in something a bit better!
~AA batteries which are cheaper than D cell batts FAR better battery life (Cuddeback advertises up to 2000 pics, Coverts have been known to get 2-3x that before) ~Smaller size, easier to place, less likely to be stolen/seen, can be used on nearly any surface (ESPECIALLY with the Tree60 mount or a small electric fence post) ~Nearly infinite adjustability for all options: Down to 1 sec recovery vs 30 sec, up to 3 pic burst mode, 3 mp OR 5 mp option, and the list goes on ~Video option as well, with video lengths from a few seconds up to a minute, with nearly instant recovery time ~NO FLASH (BUT without the grainy night pics of other no flash options) ~nearly identical trigger speed ~Same cost, well $189, which a cudde could likely be had for as well And for $219, you could get the Covert II, which has a wider beam of IR at night, easier battery placement IMO, and a more traditional housing....I like the II better, but it is $30 more, or $20 more if comparing camo to camo. That's if you want to be picky about it though. Yea yea, I know, I'm a hater. :d Now get that Cudde to good work and find out what freak daddy is lookin like.
