Anybody ever try putting a trail camera up in a tree, facing down-ish toward a deer trail? Is there some reason why this would not work?
Only reason it wouldn't work is if it were to high and it put the distance to far for the sensor to pick up any movement. Plot cameras or setting a camera to shoot at certain intervals would work good. Like have it take a pic every 10-15 minutes as well as shoot on detection.
It'll work. Depending on how high you have it it will cut down on your field of view and you might get some false triggers from tree limbs and depending on how big the tree is there may be some false triggers in windy conditions from the tree swaying. 1 other thing is its like it makes the bucks antlers look bigger. Mounting them high is a pretty common practice for some of us who choose to use the red ir cams.
Funny you ask Christine, I moved my camera to a new spot yesterday, and the only way I could get it to cover the area I wanted was to mount it way up a mountain maple. It's pointing down off a limb at about a 45 degree angle. I'm interested it how it works out.
I love hanging my cameras like this during the rut over scrapes so that the camera is not right in their face. Also like mentioned, this is a great way to catch tresspassers and thieves bc they dont normally look up, kinda like deer.
A lot of people I know that bait bear use this method, so bear don't destroy their cameras. Put them approx 10ft off the ground pointed down, I think the scrape idea would make for some neat pics!
I have seen some pics over scrapes from elevated positions. They are really cool pics, good point Zach.
almost every pic i post to this site is with the cam 9-13 feet off the ground i carry a small step ladder 5 footer with me and point the cam using a stick near the top of the cam to point at the trail or mineral lick and it works very well. cams are almost impossible to see set up like this for the deer and a thief as well.
