I've been carrying my TuffBoy Dell Latitude with me to check cameras, but that things gotta go. it wieghs more then my pack and bow together. So, I've been toying around purchasing one of the many card readers, but not sure I want to spend $50 on it. I started thinking out of the box and bingo I had an idea. Wouldn’t one be able to use one of those electronic picture frames? What a great inexpensive way to check those cameras while in the field. I've tried using a camera, but the review quality sucks. Are there any other inexpensive ideas for checking cameras while in the field?

I've done more than toy with the idea, I have did it. It works well but you have to be sure of a few things before you do it. First, make sure it will operate on batteries. Not all do. Also make sure it will read the cards from your cameras. I don't know if it's a formatting problem or what but some of the cards I tried would simply not read on that thing. It really is a good idea if it works because you can get a decent screen size and it's pretty portable. Good luck.

Why not just buy an extra set of SD cards and switch them out. I do this and check the pics back at the cabin on my laptop.

    Good idea.

I got the http://www.airstash.com/ and really like it. It's $99 and works through the bluetooth on your smartphone so you can save and email the photos instantly. Very small and lite as well.

Not as cheap but here's what I do.

Since I'm using my iPhone in the field as my video camera, I also use it to check my cameras. On my way into the stand, I swap out my SD cards. Quickly, quietly. I even give the camera a spray or 2 with my scent killer.

Then, once in my stand, I use one of these...

It's called and AirStash (www.airstash.com). It's an SD reader that sells for about $90.

I put the card in the AirStash, turn it on and >>BAM<< It creates it's own wireless signal. My phone can then view, download and share any photos from the SD card.

My only hesitation with it is that my Trophy Cams save videos in AVI which my iPhone doesn't read with Quicktime. But I love being able to flip through my photos right on my phone right in my stand.

$90 is more than you were looking at spending, but it has other uses too. If you have an iPod touch (or again an iPhone), you can stream music and even movies off it. So it expands the library that you can travel with.

FYI, I have no affiliation with AirStream, I just have one and love using it.

Might not be a fit for you, but I just wanted to throw it out there for ya :tu:

Great idea with the electronic picture frame! Might do that my self. If your wife allows it than take out one of her old digital cameras, they are small and for the most part durable. Mine fits right in the pocket of my pants and works great for checking SD cards. This prevents the need to carry around a laptop or having to take the camera out of the woods whenever you want to check for pictures

    THIS!

I carry my small camera with me and an extra memory card. I'll either check them in the field with my small camera or switch it out and head back to the shack with the memory card to check on the computer.

i switch to the micro sd inserts this year with all of my camera's, so I can view them on my phone. but with my HTC phone (from Sprint) the SD card is located behind the battery. WTF right! I brought my old Hero phone and it will read them but its a pain in the ace. I just want something I can turn on and insert the freaking card and also be able to tell what’s in the back ground of the pictures.

Fitz thats a pretty nifty tool you've got there, talk about ruffing it. lol

I bought the Moultri picture viewer from Cabelas and it works good. I also take an extra card with me everytime and swap cards so if there is something good on the viewer i can put the card in my computer and look at it closer.

I would like to be able to determine where I hunt by the photos on my cameras the next time I get down there. that won't be until oct 22nd. I was hoping that if I start checking cameras in the dark I'd know whitch stand to climb into. Since the farmers have cut out all of the corn I think the deer paterns are changing to the green bean fields in the bottoms.

Wow you guys are really impatient. :) I would rather wait and focus on the hunt. Too many things can go wrong and with my luck I would be looking at trail cam pics of a deer when a real deer walked by. Good info to know though. I am about to buy a Kodak Playsport to film my hunts so I will probably be doing the same thing.

well I just got back from Freaking Wally World and that idea isn't a cheap idea either. the cheapest one I found was about $50. I to bring spare SD cards, but this year I just so happened to have bought even more cameras, so I need to restock my SD collection.

I just use a card reader. It does just what you want it to and it's small and compact. I run 4 cameras about 10 months out of the year and deal with 6000+ pics. It was worth the investment to me.
