I think it depends on where/when you hang and how your deer react to you... Some guys even wear chest waders when hanging cameras. I'm not quite that intense. I try to stay close to road - go right before it rains, and not touch every branch i see. (my 2 cents)
I keep my trail cameras in areas deer expect to encounter some human scent, field edges, logging roads, etc. No matter what precautions you take you will leave human scent behind that deer will notice.
Right now I am more concerned about the ticks, so I spray myself down. mineral sites and bait station the deer are used to the human smell. some deer I think here my tractor and see what I left them this week. With this heat I am moving some cams to water holes this weekend. I must say I am not putting cams up right where I plan to bowhunt this fall but thats just me.
I always wear rubber gloves and try to check them midday and its nice right before a rain, starting know I will check them about every two weeks. Scoot
I do some scent control mainly for my predator sets or short term sets to scout a hunting area that sees very little to no human activity for much of the year...but if you are leaving the cam out for a period of time your scent is gone after a rain or just a couple days. I will carry some scent killer or evolve and spray the camera(cover your lens with something or you'll get a cloudy film over it). Only thing I normally worry about now is leaving anything like food smell/lure on the cam that bears will want to investigate. If I am scouting a big buck that I know uses a trail and just want to get his schedule - I will set the cam at or near the end of it's sensing range as far from where he is travelling as possible and still get consistant triggers...don't cross his favorite trail and likely he won't stop travelling it because it's like you weren't there. One thing I can say is that after a long enough time of not being threatened by you, even the yotes will come right up to your cam the night after you have been there.
Thanks for the responses! I just bought a trail cam today and the reason I asked was I noticed it had a "smell" straight out of the box. I'm putting it out tomorrow, but for now I threw it in a ziplock back with a fresh earth wafer. I figured it can't hurt.
Thanks for the info guys. Just ordered my first cam this morning and I am super pumped to get it out there! Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk 2
