I set a trail camera on a spot, again be advised I am new to bow hunting. I set the camera pointing down a trail, over 12 days I got a bunch of pictures, of basically the trail, i got a few deer a$$es, and only have two good pictures of does, It is a cheap camera so i know the shutter time on the camera is slower, i think by the time it senses the motion the deer is past the camera. I do not want to bait deer with food to keep them around, don't want to be considered a corn pile hunter, any advice you can give me? Or should I just throw a salt lick down?
What cam do you have? You may try putting down some doe urine or mock scrape like dale9805 said. Some cams are so slow when coming out of sleep mode that they are only good for a scrape or bait pile. Run some test in your yard to see how far away your cam will trigger so when you set it up in the woods you get the deer close enough for a pic. also set the cam so it faces away from the sun and where movement from leaves wont trigger the cam. My personal experence is that cams with c-cell or d-cell have low battery life and may only take pics from 1-2 weeks, the newer cams with 8 AA batterys have a lot longer life in the woods. Also if the cam has a trigger test light (L.E.D) on the front i cover it up with a piece of black tape after i put the cam up in the woods, My newest thing is to take a small step ladder in the woods when i set the cam up and put the cam about 7-9 feet up in a tree so it's out of the line of sight of (cam theft) and out of direct line of sight of the deer. a little scent killer sprayed on the cam cant hurt either. well best of luck.. roger
Another thing to try is positioning the camera facing head on towards the deer/trail rather than crossways.
I disagree here ive had 4 d batteries in my primos cam and i havent changed the batteries in it since i bought it and thats been 2 months.....its also been out since the day after i bought it taking pics..
The Primos camera is the only D cell camera I have used that does not eat batteries though... I had a Moultrie D40, and that thing went through batteries like there was no tomorrow
here is a primos truth cam 46 review. http://www.trailcampro.com/primostruthcam46review.aspx This is a good site and i highly recommend checking a trail cam review before going out and putting your hard earned cash down on any cam these days Some cams have problems, some have a lot Be a educated consumer there are quite a few web sites with cam reviews and i would look at many of them so see if the cam you are looking to buy will meet your ideal cam for your dollars you are willing to trade.
wow great website, i have the 60 and its great i guess they fixed the fuzzy pics because i havent had any for the clunks... u really have to listen for it but i can hear it sometimes but also never had deer scare away from it cause of the noise or the red light going off, ive had problems with flash before but never a red light but thats me the deer where i live in the sections we hunt are almost tame, we ride the places always slow looking through cattle and never stop when we see deer to look we keep going and the deer stay, i have walked within 25 yards of a buck (8 point, 120 class) and he stayed at my feeder just looking at me and i started walking at a angle around my feeder til i ended up 25 yards on the opposite side of him and walked to the camp
