Besides the hunt itself, my Dad always had certain routines and traditions for us when we went deer hunting: Driving to the hunt without the heat on so we could 'get our bodies accustomed to the cold'. My Dad would always have some tootsie rolls in his pocket that he'd share at just the right time. Lunch was nearly the same every hunt: pepperoni, extra sharp cheese and tangerines or tangelos. I treasure each of these memories. So what traditions do you remember, have or are going to share with somebody hunting this year?
In WI, our camp's theme is the Dances With Wolves soundtrack. It usually plays all night. We also hang our bucks package in a nearby tree to appease the deer gods, and the bluejays. Southern Comfort oldfashions would be our other tradition.
The one thing I truly love and will share with my kids is sneaking quietly into the woods early before daybreak, setting up ur stand in the trees, listening to the quiet and hearing nature at its finest. Then that early morning light comes up and you see a beautiful buck crest a hillvin front of you. Nothing better in my book. That is till I get a shot on him LOL
My son and I would always have dinty moore beef stew on top of buttered bread the first night of deer camp. My wife would always just shake her head when she saw us packing that up. He and I always liked it though and it was a easy and filling meal.
No set tradition really as far as something major..but every hunt begins and ends in prayer for me...feels weird if I forget.
