But if you look, I get a consistent tear amongst one shaft size. That tells me that the release is a constant. The only variable in that last photo was the spine weight of the shaft.
How do these bare shaft (the ones you used to paper tune)? I wouldn't dream of paper tuning, until I was "close". IMO...those tears are indicating you're not (close).
That was actually the Griz Stik Sitka from the first photo at 30", 145 grain head, and 100 grain insert nocked at 1/8" above center. It consistently tore 2.5 - 3" nock high through the paper. Moving the nock position up or down from that point only made the tear higher.
Let me ask this another way....... What's the best you've ever had a shaft bare tune? Give me the orientation of the nock when it was stuck in your target. Also...(and I suppose you know this)....a "too low" nock position can give you a false "high" reading.
Nock slightly elevated on the bare shaft but bare shafts grouping with fletched. Yep. that's why I tested everything from 1/4" low to 3/8" high in the first pic.
I'll exit, Rob. Bare shaft tuning, I look for a "slightly nock high" / "slightly spine weak" reading. When I get this, I fletch. After I fletch, I paper tune.....but I don't get anywhere near the readings you're getting. Puzzling.
The reason I said that, Rob.....is those tears don't indicate to me that you'd get a "slightly" nock high bare shaft reading. That's what is puzzling.
I wonder Rob If you didn't have a bad release with your 2018's and 2218 arrows? Identical tears. Maybe try them two again and see what the tears look like.
Those are both 2018's Steve. The 0 just looks like a 2 in the lower one. Is there such a thing as a 2218?
Lol!! Was kinda wondering If that was 2018 as well. :D Do they make 2218's, wouldn't surprise me If they do/did.
It would tell us if it's the fletching hitting the riser that's causing the kick... good point there Russel! I knew I came here for some reason. (just so that we're all clear... yes, they are feathers, not vanes.) I may have thought of something last night, I only bare shafted these arrows to 10 yards... not 30 like I normally do for my compounds. (I ran out of daylight.) I may need to revisit that as well.
I honestly thought you were shooting bare shafts when you did your paper tune. I now understand why Jeff said what he did.
