So 2 years ago I finally scratched the itch to go traditional..I sold my brand new Energy 32 loaded for $400!! I know stupid...anyways, I began my little journey and bought a cheap light recurve. I shot it for months...then I graduated to a much nicer 50# Great Northern Ghost recurve. And over the course of the late winter, spring and summer I taught myself how to shoot that bow and how to get the right arrows and head to fly true out to 20 yds. My hunting rage was 16 yds. So the 2015 season was all trad all the way.. I hunted , I missed, I shot a doe too far back and never got her, and then I snapped...2 weeks left in the season I bought a compound and I have not hunted with the recurve since. I have shot some but not much...I am disappointed in myself to be honest...I really did love shooting and learning this art. I guess killing a deer was/is still more important than I thought. I will return to it, when my instincts call me again, but I have never let go of it and I am going to go after it again at some point. Anyone ever been through this?

I've been through it before, but now I'm on season 2 of trad only. I love it and won't be going back to the compound. I missed right over the top of a spike today, but it was still an awesome hunt. I don't have to kill deer all the time like I used to. I go to enjoy myself. To be honest, I probably spend more time trying to help my wife kill deer than I go for myself. I really enjoy my family and friends having success as much or probably more so than if it were me.

Never give up continue to build your confidence and when you think your practice enough practice more if your effective range is 16 yds you need to practice out to 30 yds and so forth and when you think you know it all dig for more info from veteran archers. It took me almost 3 years to get my confidence also and now that I have it and have finally Harvest an animal with traditional equipment I finally feel more comfortable taking my bow out but I know it doest stop there I still gotta work at it and continue to get better. I hope you find ways and techniques that help you get to that level God bless

I went through that back and forth for a few years. I got the urge to hunt with a recurve. Went all out with it on year 1. Finally killed a doe with it on the public land. I was thrilled. Shot thousands upon thousands of shots through it. The bow was not really made for me so was short drawing. I really wish I had gotten a bow tailored for my specs. Anyways, after I killed that doe I cycled back to my compound during the rut. The next year I hunted with the recurve again. Killed another doe with it, then once again jumped back to the compound come the rut.

I was tempted to go back to the recurve this year as it is the most fun I have ever had bowhunting. I was thinking of buying a Bear Kodiak set at like 45 lbs and having a good time just hunting deer. Being happy to just shoot a deer with a recurve is a blessing on a hunters mind. Frees it up to enjoy the woods without having to worry about big bucks every single hunt.

I was wondering if you still hunted with it.

If I do go back to the recurve I will buy a new one. I need the draw length an inch or two longer and it lower draw weight. I want it smooth and comfortable. I really do enjoy shooting with it.

I like mine. It's a Great Northern Super Ghost. A bit long though. 47 lbs at 27" draw

I'm going after a doe this week with my PVC bow I made. It's 48lbs at 28" draw. It's fun to shoot.
