Toy had to reduce their trailer pull rates down by as much as 1000lbs when the new rating system came out.

If I wanted to tow my sons toy trailer, I'd by a toy-yota

Didn't do much digging, but I remember hearing about this a while back. Any updates on the big three...did they adopt the new system for current model years?

Ford was bailed out, by timing. The mortgaged their *** off before it all went bad. They even gave up the rights to the ford symbol.

They pulled through, I own to focus 2003 and 2013.

Article doesn't indicate that. Sounds as if the rating system was akin to bow manufacturers deciding what IBO standards to use for speed ratings.

I'll have to do some digging. I don't have anything against the three. Except Silverado and Sierras. Pappy trucks as my wife calls them:)

    http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2012/05/tow-ratings-adjust-for-2013-gm-pickups.html

As all the pickup manufacturers adhere to the new SAE J2807 towing standards this year (Toyota started early with its 2011 truck models), it’s likely that many tow ratings will fall. But for GM, its consumers are just as likely to learn that the new tow rating for select models of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will actually go up by 100 pounds for 2013, as well.

Ok, GM 1/2 tons went down, but less than the Tundra. Got it. Either way, for 1/2 ton towing, if you're consistently towing near the max rating, you shouldn't be in a 1/2 ton. I have no idea what 1/2 ton I will get when my Tacoma dies, but at the rate it's going, I have a lot of time:)

My Tacoma will be around for a long time. I have no need for hauling heavy loads anymore so I downsized pickups to one that hopefully doesn't present too many problems along the way. If anything, I'll add a car and keep the truck before I trade trucks to a full sized again.

After reading that article is a good thing we don't follow that at work. We tow double what the trucks rated for 90% of time, although it is a 3500 and 2500, looking it up its still only rated for around 16000 with gooseneck. We got pulled over in MO earlier this year with 32000 lbs on. Needless to say we got 2 tickets and 13 warnings, good thing the cop was laughing.

Well you said the hitch was bolted. Either the bolts or the hitch failed. If the hitch is an aftermarket item, that hardly makes the truck a POS.

The root cause to every engineering failure can be determined through systematic investigation. Since we are talking about static components, the fasteners are the logical starting point. Some examples: proper bolt torque (wet or dry), nut retention method used (lock washer or nylock nuts), proper fastener strength (grade 8 or better may be required for this application), and cheap steel.

Evidence of sliding contact between metallic components is indicative of loose fasteners. Once loosed, the fasteners are subjected to additional stressors that can lead to failure.

I'm sorry you lost all of your gear and I would be pissed; so pissed that I would want to get to the bottom of what happened. There is plenty of empirical evidence to prove that Toyota's are not POS. if the dealer put that bumper on, you might consider developing severe neck pain. Either way, you should collect and preserve the failed parts. Never let those failed parts get out of your sight. An experienced Mechanical Engineer or properly trained Mechanic should be able to help you out. Use good lighting and good magnifying glass when examining the failed components.

A final word. The weakest link in most failures can be traced to human error. Nobody installs a hitch that they know will fail, but not everybody installs a hitch in a way that it won't fail.

For the record, I drive a Ford.

Everyone has a manufacturer they like based on personal experience. Likewise, every manufacturer is possible of putting out a lemon. Clearly you missed the commercial where the Toyota tows the space shuttle. Things happen and metal breaks, it may have been jack-knifed before and torqued the hitch making it weak. There's just no way to tell...
