    Hi,

I've just joined this forum. A friend at work who is an experienced hunter has got me interested in hunting. Currently I have not done any hunting at all, but I have a selection of firearms that I enjoy shooting at the range.

I have zero knowledge about Bows. My friend has given me some great information, but before I start getting deeper into this and opening my wallet for equipment then I'd like to chat to a wider audience. Hence I've joined this forum.

I live in the San Diego area, but I do travel further a field. My goals are to learn:

    - Selection of a good Bow and accessories and then become familiar and knowledgable on how that equipment works
    - Become proficient and comfortable at shooting the bow at a target
    - Take and pass a basic hunting safety class
    - Get a hunting license
    - Start off going after rabbits. Learn the basic skills of following rabbit trails, shooting them and then field dressing.
    - Move up to bigger game when I get more proficient, namely dear & hogs.
    - As I have an R700 .308 then I would like to consider my bow as one of my tools for hunting and be able to use the appropriate 'tool' at the appropriate time. Learn when is the appropriate time.

Anyway.. these are my high level goals. A good starting point would be to ask you good folks if this is a reasonable set of goals and then move on to equipment selection once I have the goals nailed down

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Rob, Thanks for the reply.. my buddy and a few folks have mentioned getting hooked up with a good shop. We do have an excellent shop nearby. However lets take an example: Say I wanted a Mathews Creed bow. We're looking at around $500 difference between buying the bow and accessories online and buying it at the shop. Then we have the tax!.. so it's probably near $600.

$600 would by me a lot of lessons and setup. I could hire a local expert to set it up for me and still come out with a chunk of change in my pocket..

However it would be good to get hooked into this shop... It's a difficult choice!
