I got my information from WIDNR. I thought the #'S were kind of high until I put a camera out and I had pictures of 30 different bucks. that falls in line with what the dnr said the buck to doe ratio is.

According to our DNR, we are in an area that ranges from 20-30 per sq mile.

However, I routinely count 40+ deer (not counting fawns)on ag fields in the evening this time of year. Could these deer be drawn from a radius of 2 sections? Sure, but what % of the total population show up before dark even in the summer? 50%, 60%, 80%, I don't know.

And on these fields, I seldom see many bucks that are over 1.5yo and never anything over 3.5yo.

    Try 4 deer every 250 wooded acre. I think that's what I read anyway.

Down my way we sit at about 20 dpsm. We have a nice herd, not to big or small. We have a ton of clear cut land in different stages of regrowth (from all the amish) and have all the browse and cover the deer could need. Add in the sporatic Ag fields in my area and the deer really do have a nice place to call home.

The area (244) I hunt in MN is 21-30 deer per square mile (pre-fawn) according to the DNR.

DNR's do not usualy count any developed space in their DPSM That includes wood lots in developments, Fields behind shopping centers etc. So in short, they only count Huntable space and parkland

Interesting stuff guys, thanks for sharing. Was just curious if anyone was hunting in areas with lower populations.

Dan's camp in southern zone NY is roughly 15-20 dpsm with about 2.7-3.0 bucks killed per square mile. I can't find where PA info is listed for my property, but I estimate the population there to be closer to 20-30 dpsm, with a much higher number of bucks killed per square mile.

I hiked a patch on Sunday in our northern Adirondack zone that our state has listed as "under 5 DPSM" for the county. The buck kill in that unit last year was .6 bucks per square mile.........................I was curious if anyone on here had experience hunting spots like this.

The good news is that there is extremely low hunting pressure in this spot. The spot I hiked yesterday was literally 6 miles from the nearest public road, the only access is unmaintained 4wd paper company logging roads. Due to this, and the fact that it's all big woods (36,000 acres to be exact, over 30 miles from the nearest agriculture), the buck/doe ratio is fairly in check around 50/50 when fawns aren't counted. The age structure of the bucks is pretty good too, biologists are saying less than 30% of the buck population is killed by hunters every year. Unfortunately a LOT of deer die in these parts due to predation and winter kill, but it's still a healthy balance when purely looking at age structure and buck/doe ratio.

The bad news is that it's like hunting for a needle in a haystack. I put in several miles of hiking on Sunday, from elevations as low as 1500' all the way up to 3000'. I saw some tracks and droppings, but not a single old rub to be seen anywhere, and nothing but honeysuckle and briars for food and browse.

My inlaws and family have killed a couple dozen 100-140" bucks (175-220lb dressed weight animals) off this particular mountain over the last 30 or so years........but they typically drive for deer during our firearms season. They think I'm crazy to try and kill one with a bow in there. ;)
