Anyone else enjoy looking over your lease topo map and searching for areas you may not have noticed before? We have 3300 acres leased here in MS and I've really enjoyed building a plan at the office based on topo maps then walking those areas searching for sign. I've attached an area I really like to hunt.
I love studying the topo map and getting ideas for scouting! For me it's a 96,000 acre state forest, so in addition to looking for saddles, benches, springs, etc., I need to look for places far enough from roads and trails so I can avoid other hunters. Then when I get boots on the ground, I look for deer sign and boot prints.
I like to make buffers around oak, fields, cuttings, and water then I merge the zones take the overlapping parts and lay an isoline over the merged areas. The area I hunt is all big woods with no ag. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I use it all the time, download to my garments and plot the trails and distances. Sent from my iPad using Bowhunting.com Forums
I used topo overlay to lay out where to trim trees, mow, to create travel paths to where I decided to put the food plot and stands. Deer will cross open areas if they have the proper topography and skirt other areas. It is useful information that can be used to find the spot on the spot that can lead to a deer in bow range or just out.
I'm constantly looking at my topo maps for new places to hunt, some people look at Facebook when they are bored I look at topos lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
