Is anyone here good at reading these? Also are there any good FREE websites that offer them?? I plan on going to Ohio this year for a few days and was wondering if I could get some help with the land I plan to hunt? If I have to spend the money on them that will probably be ok as long as I can find someone on here that is willing to help a dummy like me out! Thanks I will check back later tonight, hopefully someone can help?!? Edit: The sad part is I had some real good info before through via PM and somehow I lost it all, so I apoligize to anybody that may have helped me before on this very same subject! Hey atleast someone else besides me might learn something as well!
Jeff right now I dont have any maps, thats why I was asking if there are any places to get free maps or do I have to buy them?
This is a good free one. It has aerial photo from Google, topo and street all on one. http://mapper.acme.com/ If you just want to know how to read a topographic map I can help. I personally am pretty knowledgeable about how to read a topographic map due to my work profession (civil engineering technician). I deal with them on a daily basis. If you want hunting advice I can hold my own but others are much more knowledgeable.
+1, Acme Mapper is a great tool. I've used it to draw maps here locally and for my trip out west. Can't print using Firefox though, you need to be on Internet Explorer to print them.
http://www.bing.com/maps/default.as...lt=-89.875918865193&dir=0&alt=7689462.6842358 this is a decent sight
This great site. The "Bird's eye" view is awesome. This site does NOT have topo maps however. Still it is a great resource.
Whenever you do find a map you're happy with. Save it to a jump drive, take it to "Staples", have them blow it up and laminate it. Best $15 you can spend
i learned to read topo when I was in the infantry, basic land nav skills were a necessity... its actually quite easy and I'm sure a quick google search will locate some how-to's... coincidentally, if you are gonna bother learnin topo you should learn compass/protractor/map navigation skills as well... GPS is great and all, but nothin more reliable than good land nav skills in case the batteries go out or the gps breaks... of all my military training, land nav is by FAR the most useful... unless the zombies come then proper maintenance and use of the M60 machine gun will be quite useful as well... :D
Thanks guys for all the help, I am trying to research it now! I will post up some pics and questions here in a little bit once I figure this out! I am sure I will have loads of questions to ask!!
Ok let me see if this works?? This is a link to the page of the 10000acre public land we are going to hunt....now if I just knew what I was looking at....haha!! http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=39.51397...2.16477,39%C2%B030'55.58"N 82%C2%B0 9'53.14"W I am going to try and draw a map of the borders and try to post a pic and see if anyone can help a man out?!?
Actually we are planning on hunting Sunday Creek Wildlife Area, it is 9,654 acres split between Athens/Hocking county!
Grizzly~~ I will see if I can find the Map I printed on-line from the dnr website? This is what I am going off of..... http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wil...dayCreekWildlifeArea/tabid/19831/Default.aspx
Grizzly~~ Yeah you are right it is basically connected to Trimble! I am VERY intrested in what stands out to you!!?? I may have took into the Trimble hunting area also?
Here's a large scale topo link into that area..... http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=39.49861...49450,-82.17585,1.3 mi SxSW of Murray City OH Zoom in and out, using your other map to see borders.
OHbowhntr~~ Haha I posted the same map a few posts before on the last page! I have been looking at it and trying to read on other web pages How To read the Topo maps?? Thanks a ton though, do you know anything about this area??
Grizz let me see if I can post a pic of the boundaries....now if I can find a TOPO map to save and try to draw in the boundaries that would be nice?? I am trying this ACME but I cant figure out how to save the pic? Do you suggest buying the $10 map off of MyTopo.com??
Grizzly~~~ Thank You, you hit the nail on the head of the area of where I want to hunt. Is there anything that stands out more then another on the map you provided?? I see you provided about 50 spots you would check out, but anymore then another and if you could explain to me why I would really appreciate it?!? I am going to figure out how to read the maps better and will point out some spots that stand out to me, and I will ask about them on here!?! Thanks!!!!
Thanks man! I feel good in the fact that I had a couple of spots that you mentioned marked as places that I wanted to hang one in! Specifically the two spots that you marked on the West corner where the two properties come together. I saw some REALLY nice buck sign in that area last year but I didn't have a stand set up to hunt it. I think I will this year!
