Scott, it is normally the first Tuesday in April. The exact information isn't posted yet. The code will be D-E-035-01-A. Which stands for deer, either sex, unit 35 (which also encompasses area 45 and two other GMUs), first season, archery.

Sounds like a lot of great hunts being planned.

If anyone is looking to do a DIY whitetail hunt I would suggest Kansas. I know the Kansas boys are going to say there isn't any deer there :poke: but there are places you can go after a giant.

Thanks for the tips! Do you recommend one of those areas over the other?

Yes, the birds in SD. are the easiest to hunt because of the access. Hit some of the local restaurants. The locals will take care of you, they're some of the friendliest people I've met. You will find birds quickly.

We had a Kentucky DIY whitetail hunt get cancelled on us a few years back on account of the hurricane, so I definitely want to get there someday.
Also, I WILL get a DIY mule deer. That is my number one on my DIY list. Moose, elk, etc I won't object to using an outfitter if I find the right one

Anyone have ideas on what might be the best archery moose unit in Colorado to apply for?

    Thanks,

I have done DIY elk in New Mexico and in Idaho. Both were good hunts. Turkeys in NE, MO, MS, many times. Pronghorns in WY twice. And caribou in Quebec twice. We were flown into a camp, but the hunt was all on our own. Those caribou tips were definitely my favorite hunts and I would recommend anyone to try them.

    I would like to do:

    1. spot and stalk black bear
    2. mule deer
    3. elk again, and again, and again.....
    4. anything in Alaska

I can't elaborate on it much but I have heard of a lot of issues with 'bou hunters in Quebec lately. Not sure though.

Spot and stalk bear would be easy... and cheap! By far one of the easiest animals to stalk in NA.

It has been about 8 years since I went last. Have no idea what issues you are speaking of.

Essentially, some outfitters (I'll leave names out) were taking down payments or payments in full on hunts that were never to happen. They would simply pocket the cash, cancel the hunt, and be done. The Quebec government was doing nothing to help with lost funds.

I'll throw names out there. Tutulik (spelling?) closed up shop and stole hundreds of thousands from hunters who were left in the cold. Government did nothing. A lot of smoke saying Safari Nordik was doing stuff along the same line canceling hunts with no promised return hunt date, or offering to have the hunt anyway for additional money sent in...

Personally, I'd avoid quebec caribou like the plague! If I absolutely wanted to go I'd consider Jack Hume Adventures, and him only. Too many easy opportunities to hunt bou in AK for less money to risk being screwed in Quebec with no legal options for you to pursue...

It's too bad Safari Nordik fell into that realm. I know a lot of guys have had good luck with Jack Hume.

For me it would have to be AK or bust.

Jack Runs a straight up good service in Quebec, however other then him there isnt any one up there that I would consider booking with any more.
We used to fly in to his outpost camps years ago and made several trips., The only person in camp other then the hunters was a camp care taker..other that that you were on your own. Then he did away with that format in favor of a 6:1 or 2:1 ect with a guide....price when went up accordingly. However starting last year he re introduced the outpost unguided hunts. The biggest issue has been the with the health of the herds, there is yearly talk about cutting the limit to one caribou....and the georeg River Herd is closed to hunting completely.

I want to do an Elk hunt in CO. That is on my dads bucket list as well. We said we would get together and get him a guided rifle hunt one of these days but honestly as tired as he gets from just walking 200 yds in to our hunting stand. Would still like to do something for him. I told him since he is starting to get old (68 in june) i should probably go with him because he doesnt need to go alone =) he saw right threw that statement lol.

Boy i would love to take you up on this! elk is my number 1 hunt. hope to do one someday. and being a redneck from alabama, I have never heard a bugle in person. if i get goosebumps from hearing them on tv, i can only imagine what would happen if i heard one in real life!

Patinthehat you ought to come to camp sometime. Will puts on a great camp and it can make a dream a reality. I have a thread on it in the biggame topic take a look.
