I do not think that Cobain was a great musician... I did and still do like much of their music however. But, I did witness and enjoy what happened to the rock music scene once they broke and took the radio and MTV over. The Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Peral Jam, Sublime, STP, Rage, etc etc probably would have never made it if it weren't for Nirvana. I didn't care for 80's hair metal, even in the 80's.
1. Billy Gibbons 2. SRV 3. Paul Stanley 4. Ozzy Osbourne 5. Robert Plant I must say, these guys are what applied to my life in the early to late eighties. Right now, if I had to choose just one to listen to, it would be a draw between SRV and Billy Gibbons.
Not debating the top 5 because I know very little, but I do agree with the whole once someone passes we make them a little better than they were. Remember Michael jackson, everyone in the world made fun of him, called him a molester (sp) etc...he dies and everyone cried, called him the greatest and even labeled him mis-understood...End of hijack
You guys have completely lost your musical minds. You guys act like alternative rock would have never made it had Kurt Cobain not existed. Give me a break. Pearl Jam came on the scene at around the same time and completely took over. Please never use Pearl Jam and Nirvana together. That is a disgrace. Alice and Chains was actually out there before Nirvana. If any one started it all it was these guys. I have a hard time grasping the concept that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana was responsible for alternative rock. I really have a hard time accepting that he inspired Pearl Jam and Alice and Chains. Funny stuff right there. I also agree had Kurt Cobain had not died, hardly anyone would be talking about them today. They sucked that bad.
Nirvana's play time on MTV without a doubt opened the doors for the bands that followed. I agree that Pearl Jam was a superior band, no contest. But Nirvana's sound was so unique and so different, it made people pay attention to and actually seek out alternative music. I also agree that many of those bands would have eventually made the scene without Nirvana. But make no mistake, Nirvana was the first and ushered in a rock revolution.
The only good thing to come from Nirvana was Dave Grohl. The band was short lived and can hardly be looked at with deep talent. They rose to fame because many were tired of the hair band 80's and Electronic Pop scene of bands like Depeche Mode, New Order and The Cure. The Music was short lived and most of the musicians from the Seattle scene have faded away. We are talking about front men here, not guys who were whacked out on Heroin and offed themselves before there was ever long term legitimacy behind their sound.
You did not read what I said, you read what you wanted it to say. Never did I imply that those bands were a result of or inspired by Nirvana, I said Nirvana breaking on the scene made it possible for those bands to make it as well. Nirvana hit it big and the music industry looked for more of these "grunge" bands to sign and release albums. How this isn't obvious to everyone is beyond me. FYI Nirvana probably doesn't make my top 5 of Alt. bands from the 90's. Another FYI Pearl Jam 10 was my first Alt. CD. I thought Evenflow was the sweetest song ever, I was in 7th grade.
Made kids stop practicing their instruments and killed a whole era of musical ability.... For the record i cant stand nirvana I would have to go with jagger, Steven tyler, Van zant Mercury And Morrison in no specific order
My fav Is ACDC's Bryan Johnson. No one has ever had a voice like his. All of ACDC's singers have had unique voices.
I grew up listening to Nirvana and love pretty much everything they ever did. While you can't argue that they helped ignite a major change in the music industry at that time, there's no way Kurt was a good frontman. The guy despised being idolized and his success was a major catalyst for his depression, drug use, and ultimately his suicide. He was not very charismatic, outspoken, or "larger than life". In most regards he was a pretty mellow guy who tried to keep to himself. Inspiration to a generation of musicians that came after him? Yes. Great frontman, No. My top 5 would be in no particular order Diamond David Lee Roth Robert Plant Axl Rose Mick Jagger Steven Tyler I'm not huge fans by any means of all the music these guys made, but there's no questioning their greatness as leading men in a rock and roll band. A great front man exudes confidence, has charisma coming out of his ears, and carries a show almost by himself. All of these guys could do that with ease. And what about Elvis? Or a guy like Garth Brooks? Two of the biggest names in music history and both were/are GREAT front men.
Personally I just never did get Queen, so Mercury would certainly not be on my list. I wasnt much on Pink Floyd either. Guess they werent Big Hair enough for my Gen!
You don't like Pink Floyd OR Queen? What is wrong with you?! All joking aside and out of curiosity, why not?
Another early funeral for a spoiled little rich brat He was a waste of space IMO 1. David Lee Roth 2. Sting 3. Bono 4. Micheal Stipe 5. Lita Ford
