So I decided to get one last hunt in while in California the other day and messed up big time. I was stalking this mule deer and got within 200 yards up this hill of mostly dry grass and loose gravel when suddenly I lose my footing and slide, I would guess about 150 yards down the hill. After dusting myself off and checking to see if I was injured (had an arrow nocked when I fell) I found my bow. This is where things get iffy. As I examine my bow I realize there was gravel up and down the newly waxed string and inside the cams. I wiped the dust and gravel off the string but I'm unsure about what to do with the gravel in the cams. Should I WD40 the daylights out them to lubricate them and just call it good enough or what? Any advice would be appreciated because I really don't want to shoot it again and risk destroying my equipment. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I would take a garden hose and spray it down good and inspect it again. or dunk it in a creek if your out hunting. slowly draw it and any gravel will fall out.
WD-40 is not a lubricant. It's a solvent or degreaser. Plus it stinks so bad I wouldn't use it anywhere hear hunting for the scent of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
IMO id ideally want to take my cables off and thoroughly clean it. But as tight as the cables are I also want to second what tc racing said with the hose! you will get out of life what put in it
If possible I would go see my local pro shop go and have the string taken off, lubed and cams checked for offset and damage.
I may have to do that when I get the chance. I need to get it restrung anyways come to think of it since it's been a little over 2 years so I'll get them to take a look at it when I go in to do that. Thank you!
The string that came with the bow that I've used solely for target practice since November 2014. I have no idea how often the stings need changed and the guy I talked to at the archery shop told me I needed to get it restrung. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Of course then he told me he was going to charge me $250 so I said I would get it done somewhere else and left the store Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Keeping your string well waxed will last 4-5 years. A good brand of string installed is only about 75-100$ Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
Is over waxing a sting a thing? I wax my string after every trip to the range. I have a Bear Attitude and the guy told me that the string stretches and that's why I was able to buy the bow for cheap ($350 from BPS on black Friday a few years back) and suggested I replace it immediately.
