A few weeks ago, a long time friend of mine called me up and asked if I would mind taking him turkey hunting for the first time. I have known this guy for 15 years and he is now 63 years old. I told him that I would be happy to. On his way down here (2.5 hour drive), he stopped at a sporting good store and asked them what he needed. Of course they sold him pretty much every gadget ever conceived for hunting and a few other items for the hunt. When he arrived here Friday afternoon, we went through the stuff and I showed him what to return on his way home. Between Friday and Saturday he saw over 30 toms and had one strutting in front of him at 40 yards for almost 10 minutes. It wouldn't come any closer and he never took the shot. The rest of the time we spent stalking and trying to get him another chance. We were supposed to go back out this morning and both overslept. After some coffee, he had to go so he could visit with his 82 year old mother on the way home. I was disappointed in myself for not getting more birds to come within range and yet he told me it was a blast and says he's now hooked. I guess it's matter of perspective on what constitutes a successful hunt.
Hey it is never too late to start someone into this wonderful world of hunting but hey at least you both had a good time and that is the most important part of hunting. Good job on bringing them in even that close, some people go out all season and don't get even within 50-60 yrds.
