Been kicking around the idea of getting a new bow but season is now fast approaching and I am just kind of wondering what you guys think about getting a bow this late. Since by the time I would really get to start shooting the new bow it would be the very end of July or beginning of August so I would have about 1.5 months before season gets started.

I am currently shooting a Jennings Buckmaster 2000. I was dead set on using this one and just buying a new one next year but I have been really trying to refine my technique and have found my DL is probably about 2-3 inches short on this bow. To be honest its kind of messing with my head. I have always known it was short. I was 15 when I got it but I was 6'4" and probably should have had about a 31" draw but where we got the bow just sold us what they had and didn't really care about what I needed. Now 12 years later and 2 inches taller I am really getting into bowhunting and want stuff that fits and feels right.

What do you guys think. Should I try and get a new bow now this close to season or deal with what I have this year and get an early start next year with a new bow. I know it will kill a deer i did it with it last year so thats not an issue just more about getting me in the right head space and trying to break bad habits. They are hard to break when what you shoot doesn't fit right.

Also, whats out there that sports around a 31" to 32" draw. I know the Z9 and one of the Hoyts but about everything else I have looked at stops at 30".

Sorry about the long post. I get long winded on these forums.

With the incredible bows available today.... you'll be shooting great and probably extremely comfortable within only days, so several weeks of shooting time and you'll be more than ready!

This has been an awesome season for new bows. The market has never offered so many impressive rigs! Check several out and make sure you shoot a bunch of different models and then decide.

    Good luck and good shootin'

I'm new to the forum and bowhunting but being 6'5, I have a 31.5 DL and i've found that comfort makes all the difference. Find a bow that has a long enough draw for you and try it out. The brands are limited(from what I hear) on a DL that long, but if you look, I'm sure you can find one soon enough.

Not sure what your price range is, my Parker is 31"-32" and I am going to practice with a Bowtech that is the same.

I currently shoot a Hoyt but I recently shot the Mathews Z9 set at 31" and man was it sweet. Smooth, quiet and fast. There are not a ton of long draw bows out there but most mainstream bow manufacturers have at least one(Not all of them but most). In some cases you can have one built to your specs but that can get costly buying specific cams, limbs, etc. I was really impressed with the Mathews though!

I really don't want to go over $800. That being said I will probably be shooting whatever I get for the next 8-10 yrs so if I think I can buy a ton better bow by going past that some I won't cry too much about it.

Anybody here use Mission by Mathews. See good things about them and have a lot of the same features as Mathews at a lower price point. Thoughts?

Really crazy to be saying 600 is a middle of the road price for a bow now. My bow was 300 when I bought it and it was one of the baddest ones around then. (Or so I have been told.)

Definitely not too late. You'll notice a world of difference with the correct DL.

I would definetly buy the new bow now. If you know it is too short and you get a chance at an animal, you dont want that thought in the back of your head. Good luck picking out a new bow and I hope you have a great season.

The more experience you have the less time you'll need to set up and tune the new bow. I've hunted with them 2 days after opening the box before.

I've grabbed them off the shelf, set them up, sighted them in on the range and then went out to the woods before. A lot of it depends on how comfortable you are.

Definitely not to late to buy. And for a bow with your draw, check out the mathews MR7. I also have a long draw (31.5"), and I bought an MR7 and its the best bow I have ever shot.

Go for it, you have a couple months until the start of the season, you should be comfortable shooting your bow by then.

Should be fine with a new bow.. when I got my z7 it took like 3 days to be dead on with it & feel deadly !!! befor that I had not shot in over 6 months.. todays late model bows are amazingly easy to shoot mate :) hope that helps... that being said, if it was me in youre place I would wait till next year to see whats out befor buying a new one this late in the year.

I just bought a MIssion last week because I was in the same boat as you. I got my Parker when I was 14 and now that I am 21 I had outgrown it. I was going to wait until next season also but I shot some bows in the shot and I was sold. I am in love with my Venture. It is so incredibly smooth and quiet. I shot it right after shooting a Mathews Z7 and there was not nearly enough noticeable difference to warrant spending the extra $300. I spent $490 on the Venture when the Z7 was going for close to $800. My dad has an older Mathews (SQ2) and mine blows his out of the water, granted it is almost 10 years old. The mission is fast, quiet, light, and just feels great to me. Go to your bow shop and shoot some Missions and Mathews as well as other bows to see what you like.
