Quitting Tobacco/dip/cigs revisited Remember the thread we had last summer about quitting dipping, chewing, and cigarettes? I hope everyone is doing well and has quit or is in the process of quitting. For me, I have not dipped or chewed for 18 months and will not start again. Both of my grandparents on my mother's side died of smoking related causes when I was 7, and in fact I found my grandmother dead in our home. Today I just found out a lady I have worked with the last 5 years has an incurable lung condition, giving her 2-3 years to live, maybe less. She has smoked a good deal of her life. She is only 50 years old and has two boys, one in the military and one entering basic training this summer. She was working on getting her certfication to be an administrator in the school system and is someone I find to be a breathe of fresh air in the public school system. Remember guys, keep working hard on quitting the tobacco, please.
i'm still chewing, don't think i was in any thread on saying i would quit but at least i'm not smoking full time, only every once in awhile, mabey 1-3 cigs a month. i know i should stop congrats to virginiashadow and dmen
I've cut back on smoking but started chewing again on the trip out to Texas. I am not allowed to smoke in the wife car so driving 12 hours a day to get here I picked up a can of Cope and remembered how good it was.
It was 2 years on May 6 for me and the smokes. Can't say that I don't miss one from time to time, but won't be back to them. Feels good to hoof it up the hill and not be winded.
Haven't had a dip in over 5 weeks. In all honesty, I really don't miss it. I don't know how the heck I did it. I tried to quit three different times and couldn't. This time I threw my can away that still had a couple dips in it and haven't looked back since. A lot of it had to do with my ex-wife battling ovarian cancer. I've had the outlook that I have to make sure I'm around if she don't beat this thing. Putting something in my mouth that is known to cause cancer while her body is fighting everyday just didn't make sense to me.
I never started, nor ever had the desire to, so I'm fortunate to not have to try and quit. Good luck to all of you guys making the attempt to quit. My one question, however, is what made you start? I don't mean that condescendingly, but I was always just curious.
Not really sure why. No one in my immediate family smoked. Dad hated it. Had an uncle who smoked that we worshiped when we were kids. Hung out/hunted with my cousin's who smoked. That is when I started. Wasn't pressured into it. Suppose I thought it was cool or some stupid thing like that Wife hates it and so does my kids... yet I am still smoking. Over 30 years now. Tim
I did it because of the friends I was running with at the time and then they (cigs/dip) got the hooks into me. I imagine it's quite the same with drugs. Most probably never imagined enjoying/craving a needle in their arm, but once the hooks are in it's damn hard to stop. Alcohol for some is much the same.
June 20th made 2 years tobacco free...Congrats to all who are free of nicotine, and best of luck to everyone else who is fighting the good fight.
BEN, 2Lunger, Michael, Tribal, and BC---GREAT job! Every once in awhile I will get the urge to put a Levi in while I am scouting but I never stop and get it. I may start chewing tree bark when I am in the woods. I never chewed until I went to college, then I saw many of my football coaches and friends chewing and dipping, so I started. So over the next 14-15 years I chewed and dipped off an on. Sometimes I would dip for 2-3 months then quit, or I would chew for a year then quit. Then I realized last spring that I just needed to dump the chewing all together so I did and have not relapsed at all.
i started smoking to be like my dad, or be "cool", i know lame. then i started chewing cause i couldn't smoke in school, not that chewing was allowed, but we hid it well. i stopped everything for 3+ years and then started back up again, no idea why??? i need to stop again
I stopped chewing around 16 years ago but have had a chew a few times in social settings since then. After almost needing a second gum transplant on my lower front teeth it was time to quit.
Dip I hear you fellas, I "quit" for 6 months, started again for a month, stopped once again....now back again. However, when I've had enough of it I stop. I think it's just a boredom thing for work....quit work and I'll quit spittin'!
The lady in my original post just six months ago passed away yesterday. The doctors gave her two to three years to live, she lived just six months. She was a smoker. Please guys, reduce your smoking/dipping or eliminate it.
I quit smoking cigarettes the day before bow season started in in 2005. Haven't touched one since. I did start smoking cigars about 2 years ago. Again, I quit the day before deer season this year and that was much easier to stop. I don't think I'll ever start anything again, it's really stupid. I do wish that I wouldn't get hooked so badly on cigars, because I do enjoy a good one with some good scotch.
After reading this I just spit my dip out especially the gum transplant thing. I've chewed since I was like twelve. I started because everyone did it, its what cowboys do, and Dad does it so it can't be all the wrong right? I chewed all through highschool and college and am very good at concealing it in my upper lip. I throw in a dip to go to bed most nights. The first couple years I did it I knew I could quit at anytime and never craved it just liked it. I did it cause I was bored in a tractor, bored checking cows, nervous about the bronc I was bout to get on, bored on long trips, nervous before a fight, etc. Now I crave it way to much, go through at least a can a day. $5 x 365 = $1825 a year. People always ask "why don't you just quit? My answer was my dad didn't raise no quitter! Well as of today and reading your posts I'm QUITING. Probably going to get a little cranky but thank you guys.
Do it Cowboy, it will be a life changer for you. I quite 2-2.5years ago and have not looked back since. I dipped on and off for 12-13 years probably. Maybe you can slowly reduce your use if it is too hard to go cold turkey.
