To be successful at hunting (whatever animal). Where do you draw the line and say "that's it, I will not go any further, or stoop any lower, to be successful in taking this animal"?

Where do you draw your line?

I have a pretty strong code of ethics so no animal Is worth taking a risky shot on no matter the size. Many times I could've crossed that line and might have been successful, not worth the chance In my book. Getting an animal and being successful Is nice but just being out there and enjoying what mother nature has to offer Is what It's all about to me.

So, some will do "anything" in their power as long as it is legal? Please elaborate.

I draw the line at legal at the bare minimum. I rarely if ever bait, I don't see myself hunting a high fence operation for anything beyond turkey, and I honestly don't see myself reaching for the rifle on a dedicated bowhunt when the going gets tough. I try and only take shots I view as slam dunks, and want to end the life of said animal as quickly as possible within reason.

There are alot of self imposed limits we all follow, doesn't mean they should be universal for everyone. Just because I personally don't bait deer, doesn't mean its any less of an accomplishment for someone else to take one over bait...I just choose not to myself. And I can't WAIT for the day I get to kill a bear over a bait station! Same with everything I listed, it's all MY limits only...and not all are absolutes; I say no High Fence, but what if it were 10,000 acres...is that even really a game farm type setting?

Too many variables to set any absolutes, mine are only suggestions or guidelines I see myself sticking to for the most part.

If I had to cheat or something to get an animal it sure wouldn't feel right to me.

I follow the law and also feel I am a pretty ethical hunter. I never take low percentage shots.

I do know plenty of people who are not afraid to bend or break the rules.

Do you find people that hunt using methods that are consistent with the law to be stooping low to kill an animal? Please elaborate.

My line, besides the legal side, is where my enjoyment of hunting that animal is diminished by the effort that I put in to killing it!

    I draw several lines.....

    1. I will only put enough time in scouting or hunting as to not effect my ability to still be a good husband and good father to my 3 boys.

    2. I will only use a bow to be successful.

    3. I strive for ethical behavior and to be a trustworthy hunting companion.

    4. I will follow the law to my best ability unless it compromises my ethics

    Well said.

This pretty much mirrors my thoughts on the matter. Great post DC.

If it is legal, and you are happy with the way you hunt/harvest said animal, I will only congratulate your success.

I will not break any laws to take an animal and I will not attempt a shot that is outside my effective range. My goal is to take an animal legally and ethically.
