To all my claustrophobia inclined friends....imagine this little scenario

I have claustrophobia, not horrible, but it definitely can become horrible in certain situations.

Well last weekend I went to the Kings Dominion amusement park with my kids and my nieces and nephews. My oldest daughter talked me onto a wild stand up roller coaster and even though I don't like roller coasters I agreed to ride it with her. We waited in line for a bit and all the rides were running smooth and on time.....until I get locked into the stand up roller coaster. We were locked in for like two minutes when an attendant stated we were temporarily on pause until service technicians could look at the computer. I waited about two more minutes and I started to get that panicked feeling that anyone with claustrophobia can relate. I began to sweat and my daughter knew something was wrong. I calmly asked the attendant to let me off the ride, yet she replied, "I can't, nobody can until the service techs get here....". At that point I nearly lost and told her to "get me off the friggin ride now!". I pushed on the locking mechanism so hard I felt metal gears starting to grind, yet I could not get out.......enter absolute horror. The only thing that kept me from going into a complete and utter meltdown was I didn't want to embarrass my daughter. We had to wait another five minutes or so before the situation was remedied, for a total of about ten minutes of not being able to move my body. I had to enter a friggin zen like state to keep from swallowing my own tongue....not kidding.

Never again will I ride a stand up roller coaster with that locking mechanism, ever.

    I need therapy now.

How would you like to be able to be locked into something like this for ten minutes and not being able to move? The pic is NOT me, just an example of the restraints.

Wow that sounds rough. I don't have that problem. It's probably a good thing considering my job has me putting a air mask on and crawling though by buildings.

I have also been stuck on a roller coaster though, I didn't get stressed out but more pissed because I've been waiting for so long and the. They have issues once I get on.

Brett, I know I shouldn't laugh... but I am cracking up

I have it too, but unlike you I have never gotten it while on a ride.

One time we were in a cave and it almost happened tho...

    But you look so happy.

I can't say I have phobias, but I do not like being stuck on anything I can't get off.

Is that Richard Marcinko in that picture?

Being stuck like that probably wouldn't faze me too much. If I can rationalize that I'm okay and will get out of there, I'm good.

I have been 'stuck" on a roller coaster but it was because it was raining and they shut it down right as it got to the first peak. I think it was We sat there for a bit.... getting wet and then had to get off the ride and walk back to the platform. Too wet for the brakes to work or something. It kind of sucked but it was better than flying off a rail.

Oh how I feel your pain! I use to wrestle in high school... pity the fools that got me tied up so I couldn't move or my face was covered so I couldn't see - I erupted like a volcano and usually ended up pinning them rather quickly after that adrenaline kicked in.

Glad you made out okay... claustrophobia is a terrible feeling!!!

Im not afraid of roller coasters---well okay just a little bit. Hahahahaha. I AM afraid of getting tied up and not being able to move and that is exactly how I felt last weekend! That may have been the worst my claustrophobia has ever been.

A guy called me because he had beaver destroying his trees. He wanted them trapped out. He also had problems with coon so he would be pleased if we got them too. While setting beaver sets, we saw 3 good sized coon come out of culvert under a road. I had another guy with me so we took off running. I chased the coon back into the culvert while the other guy went and got my .22 rifle.

The culvert wasn't real big but I did mange to kill all three. Well they weren't moving any more. We then decided who was going into the culvert to get them. The other guy freaked out and said no way was it going to be him. I laughed at him and called him a *****. Granted I really didn't want to go in there either but they were nice coon.

I started into the culvert. It was tight and there was no crawling in on hands and knees. I could barely get my shoulders into the culvert. I more less just drug myself in using my hands and arms. The only way out was to push myself back out backwards.

They died about the mid way point so it was 20' I had to go in. About half way in I was getting a little phobic. Then I started to wonder if they were all dead. I stopped and shined the flash light on them. I had a huge feeling of... I need to get the hell out of here. The guy outside the culvert was going a little nuts hollering at me to find out if I was ok, if I was stuck or are the coon dead ?? I finally barked at him to shut the flip up. He was not helping me.

I laid there for a couple minutes, watching the coon while I gathered myself. I continued on. It was slow paced to say the least dragging myself in. The coon were dead !! :tu: I was still creeped out big time as I was moving them around so I could grab a back leg on each one to drag them out. The thought of one playing dead, coming back to life and chewing my face off... was a little unnerving.

Pushing myself backwards with one arm and hand as I drug the coon back was a very, very slow process. For some reason it didn't bother me as bad as going in. I was exhausted by the time my feet hit the outside of the culvert. I hollered at the guy to pull me out. While he pulled me out... I let go of two of the coon once they were a few feet from the edge of the culvert.

Once he had me pulled out and saw the one coon... he asked, " weren't there 3 coon ?? ". I said yep. You have to go in and get the other two. I am too tired. The look on his face was priceless !! " Ain't no way I am going in there !! "

I laugh and called him a wuss among other things. I reached back in and pulled the two coon out. I laughed some more as he called me a few not so very nice things.

This happened 26 years ago when I was young and foolish. I couldn't do it now !!! Not sure if I got smarter or am just a wuss now in my old age.

I know what Brett was going though. You really have to force yourself to calm down. Every part of you is screaming... get out of there. I hate being in tight spots and not being able to move. If I can move just a little... I am ok or can at least keep calm. Getting strapped into the roll coaster ride wouldn't have bothered me because I could move my legs and arms.

I would have more of a problem with the ride itself now. I used to love those types of ride. Now they make me dizzy, weak and light headed. The last one my oldest daughter talked me into going on... about killed me. I was so happy when it ended !! Never again !!!!!!!!!

I'm not claustrophobic at all, but my wife is. She wasn't always that way. She was an Engineman in the Navy (think diesel mechanic with other various duties). One of her earlier duty stations was a tender, the USS McKee. My wife was part of a maintenance team that was sent aboard a sub to work on some systems. She had to go into the sonar array to "gas free" the space before some work was done. In order to get to this space she had to crawl through a tube, something like Tim's culvert above.

There was a watch posted outside the access hatch going into this tube while she was in there. Well, there was supposed to be - the watch had walked away. As my wife started crawling back out the tube someone came across the open hatch. Since there wasn't a watch there that person shut the access hatch and turned the lights off. This isn't like turning the lights off in a house. You turn the lights off inside a ship or a sub and it's pitch black. No light what-so-ever. She said she absolutely freaked out.

She managed to crawl to the hatch, but she couldn't see and didn't know how to open it. No-one could hear her screaming. She finally managed to gather her wits somewhat, grab a wrench and start banging on the hatch, screaming the entire time. Finally someone went to figure out where that annoying noise was coming from and opened the hatch.

Now, even all these years later, she can't even stand to have the covers pulled over her head.

I know I said I don't have phobias but I hate being in the dark in a strange woods. I get absolutely creeped out when I realize I have no idea which way is out.
