Well, I put on all my gear and shot last night. Needless to say my string was hitting my lite camo jacket every time. Do I need to get an arm guard to keep my jacket tight around my arm? Any other tips. My string typically does not hit my arm when shooting with a bare arm.
The best thing to do is use a proper grip. It will not only prevent this, but will also make you more consistent in your shooting. You should be contacting the grip directly beneath your thumb, with all contact points of your hand on the thumb side of the lifeline. Your knuckles should be at a 45 degree angle. If you do this, it's nearly impossible to hit your arm with the string.
I have always shot with an open stance (about 45% angle) towards the target and a slight bend at the elbow. This prevents the bow string from ever making contact with my arm no matter how much clothing I have on. I actually saw Chuck Adams preaching the open stance as a tip on a hunting show once but it's just happens to be the way I learned to shoot.
I've only done that once when I was first learning, on my bare arm (ouch!) Changed my grip and never done it since. Is you draw lenght a little long? This can contribute to it, there should be a relaxed bend in your elbow on your bow arm.
I don't think so but I will check tonight. So if my bow arm is straight or almost straight my DL is too long? Stupid question. Why do they sell arm guards if you are holding the bow wrong if your string is hitting your arm? Doesn't make any sense to me.
I dropped from 29" to 28" draw bow...now bend elbow...have never hit arm since - and can pull off shots with a pretty thick winter coat as well.
Yeah, I am thinking more and more about this. My bow arm does seem pretty straight by my memory. That may be why.
Stance and grip, which has already been mentioned. Also I am guessing your bow doesn't have a string vibration dampener,if it did your string will never make it to your arm.
