Darn it Tony. I missed it. I was thinking that it was coming up but thought it wasn't for a while yet. Congrats to your son. Maybe I'll meet you in Mad town. I better start writing stuff down on my calander! I live only 4 1/2 miles from where your son shot.

Cool little article found on the Wisconsin Dnr website:

More than 500 students compete at annual state archery tournament
Wisconsin Rapids school hosts state competition
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. -- Students came from all points in Wisconsin to compete in the Fourth Annual National Archery in the Schools Programs State Archery Tournament, an event that has doubled in participation each year showing increasing interest in a sport Department of Natural Resources Secretary Matt Frank calls educational, physical and fun. The National Archery in the Schools Program consists of target archery where archers shoot at a bull’s-eye target to score points. Frank toured the grounds of the March 26-27 event at East Junior High Field House in Wisconsin Rapids.

“The National Archery in the Schools Program is a great effort that kids from fourth grade to high school enjoy,” Frank said. “Archery provides a fun challenge to kids while teaching attention to detail, focus, discipline and teamwork.”

Organizers say enrollment in the Wisconsin tournament has doubled each year since the start of the state shoot, forcing the expanded schedule to accommodate the archers from grades four through 12. Students represented schools from around the state and from far away as Superior, Marinette, Florence and Trevor in Kenosha County.

A strong partnership exists between DNR and Wisconsin Archery Alliance for the national organization. DNR wildlife management and law enforcement staff and volunteers handle the training of teachers. The Alliance handles all the details of coordinating the state tournament.

“The program was piloted in 2002 in Kentucky,” Mary Kay Salwey, DNR state wildlife education administrator said of the program she handles for the agency. “Today, just seven short years later, the national archery program is in 46 states, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa with nearly 5,000 schools enrolled in the program, worldwide. Two Canadian provinces also participate, with two more coming on board by this summer.”

One million students are expected to participate in NASP by the end of the current school year.

Once teachers are certified through the Basic Archery Instructor workshop they are ready to teach archery. In Wisconsin, nearly 60 Basic Archery Instructor Trainers train teachers during an 8-hour, hands-on workshop. Trainers are avid archers with a minimum of five years archery experience who, since 2005, have trained more than 700 youth educators, including school teachers, camp counselors, home schoolers and city parks recreation department youth leaders.

Bruce Trimble, the former field director for National Field Archery Association, WAA board member and lead organizer of the Wisconsin NASP State Tournament, said physical size, strength or speed doesn’t matter in this program.

“National Archery in the Schools Program allows all students – regardless of athletic ability or gender – to participate,” Trimble said. “What’s really neat is that physically challenged students can participate. Rules allow students with disabilities to have a helper and it’s amazing to see how well they do.”

Wildlife conservation groups like Wisconsin Chapter of Wild Turkey Federation, Whitetails Unlimited, Wisconsin Bowhunters Association, Safari Club international, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation as well as many county rod and gun clubs and local businesses have supported the program and helped schools purchase equipment.

Wisconsin is home to four of the 10 manufacturers of the equipment used in the NASP archery kits. Matthews, Inc, manufacturers of compound and traditional bows is the parent company of Brennan Industries, of Sparta, which produces the Genesis Bows used in NASP, Field Logic, Inc of Superior and Rhinehart Targets of Janesville supply two of the three target choices in the program, and Archery Shooter Systems of Endeavor produces one of the three bowstands available to teachers.

In addition to the program sponsors mentioned above, additional support for this year’s tournament was provided by: Scheel’s A

Yes a very small school in a small town but I like it this way. You would think with us so close to IL and all these city folk from there we wouldn't have much interest but our numbers doubled from last year.
