I did not see this coming. http://eye-on-baseball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22297882/34555236
Not really all that sad to see him go. It'll be interesting to see how his weight and numbers are in a few years.
The tigers talent has been there, they just haven't been able to put it together for the duration of a season.
What they really DON'T need is a guy that polarizes the locker room. I don't really know what kind of reputation Fielder has off the field.
Johnny was just saying that to me. He seems to be kind of an intravert. He's gotten along well in the Brewer locker room, but it will be interesting to see how he meshes in Det.
As long as he doesn't drink scotch while driving, plays drunk or gets in violent fights with his wife, Miggy will still enjoy the extracurricular spotlight.
I guess I'm in the minority. I really don't see where the Tigers think this was a good deal dropping 214mil on him. 45 million annually between Fielder and Cabrera? Essentially you just picked up another Cabrera. Good offensive numbers and a defensive liability. And just made a mess of third base or outfield or wherever they are planning on shuffling Cabrera. Been tried in the past and hasn't worked out. Obviously they got better with the deal, but I think the money could have been used better to make them even better. And as far as this year, they didnt 'make themselves much better with martinez being out for the year. I think he'll fit in fine there. He's grew up in Detroit and around that organization.
Not suprised he got a long term deal in the AL. At least as his weight increases he can play DH. He won't be much good for a NL team in a few years. It was a good stint in Milwaukee but it was time.
All the top free agents get overpaid these days. Look at the last 5-6 years, especially. All overpaid. No doubt Fielder isn't worth $214 mil, but its only the second dumbest contract this off season. The Pujols deal was even worse. Just how it goes now. The Tigers weren't even looking at Fielder until Martinez got hurt. Most teams only get a 2-3 years tops to make a run at the World Series. The Tigers feel their time is now. I expect Fielder to have a good year, if not a career year like everyone else that bats next to Cabrera. Hell, Jhonny f'n Peralta, a career .256 hitter, hit .299 last year. Was over .300 for much of the year until the last day of the season. Martinez also had one of his best offensive seasons last year. Where these clowns (Fielder and Cabrera) will play is going to be interesting. Fielder made it clear in the off season he did not want to DH. My first thought is they would split time at first and DH. $214 mil can make you change your mind. I hope they don't move Cabrera to third again. He was a terrible third basemen when he was 30 lbs lighter. I can't imagine how bad he would be now. As a Tiger's fan, I like it. Losing Martinez was a huge hit. I think getting Fielder puts them right back near the top in the AL.
Exactly. People question why they picked up Fielder, Martinez getting hurt Is the exact reason I think. If Martinez never got hurt I'd bet Fielder would've never been signed by the Tigers.
A move to the AL is the smartest thing he could have done. Did he get a no trade clause Vito? If he didnt I bet he wont spend all 9 years in Detroit.
