hi , got a question for some of you guys that may have experienced this. we went out around 10 am yesterday to check out a place i hunted several years ago. i havent hunted this spot for a few years ,last time i was there i had about 40 ticks climbing up my pant legs . the deer were moving through there around 11:00am just as i suspected with the full moon. our scouting was cut short because of the darn ticks. my son and i were both covered with them . you always seem to have one or two no matter where you hunt . but this place is unreal we both had about 30 ticks climbing up us we stood on the haul road into this place and pulled ticks off each others clothes like a couple of monkeys for about 10 minutes. i cant figure out why this place is so bad. i sprayed off tick repelent on my pants and it didnt even matter. have any of you guys seen an area like that .
Not this late in the season. Tick repellant often doesn't work. No stinkn tick repellant works alright. If it is your land go to pick up some ant and tick killer it comes in a bag and you spread it around the tall grass area in the spring or early summer. That will take care of some of them.
wow, that sounds nasty! gives me the creapy crawlies just thinking about it. yeah i'd say check the market for some heavy duty stuff and see if you can stand it. yuck
It seems as some ares are worse than others. Here in GA we have ticks and there's another little bug that some call a red bug. It's not a chigger or a tick but will bite the hell out of you and lock onto your skin like a tick. You have almost have to pull them off like a tick and the bite itches for weeks. It's almost like a skeeter bite on steroids. Seems to be more prevelant in the hardwoods. But like 130 said, they're usually gone by this time of year or at least dwindling down. We haven't had a day in the 30's yet where I hunt so they're still out there. Wish I had a solution for you cause I'd like to know what to do myself.
Lunga Resevoir at Quantico was like that this summer...been out a bunch of times since Oct not a single tick so far. My daughter had PTSD from the damn things this summer, they were all over her. You would have 2-3 on you if you even went near the grass, and more in the leaves.
thanks guys, ive just never seen anything like it you can literally be covered in ticks and i mean have 40 or 50 ticks on you in a matter of 15 minutes, i told my son there are some monster bucks back here , but its not worth compromising your health for. and i cant imagine how many ticks the deer must have on them. its just wierd none of the other places we hunt are like that.
I recently brought this topic up at my local archery club. There is a father and son pair that are CONSTANTlY pulling them off each other. We were out tracking one night and the son pulled a few off of him as usual. As usual I didn't have a single one on me, but we were side by side tracking and on our hands and knees crawling through the same brush. This got me thinking as to why in four years I've found one on me and this guy finds ten on him everytime he goes out. A days later I was speaking to some avid hikers I know. They started complaining about how bad the ticks are this year. They mentioned a statement I was looking to validify on the site so I'm glad this topic has come up. I personally believe it has something to do with your body's chemistry and the pheremones involved, but that is a whole different topic. This person immediately said, "I bet you eat a lot of garlic." I said yeah a few times a week. They claimed they started taking a garlic supplement pill and they no longer have issues with ticks. I have a hard time believing the statement. Ben got lime's disease and he probably eats just as much garlic as me. So the question is, is he the exception to the rule or has anyone else heard of this crazy statement? Is garlic in your system really a natural deterant for ticks?
