She's been there a little over a year. They told her no they don't offer sick pay to their employee's.

To me It's lieing. I can't stand lairs.Yes Jeff there Is a notice thing. Most places are like that, at least they were for me when I was working for someone.

All I know Is they want a notice for vacation days and If their fine with her taking vacation over a sick child they better not get pissy when she calls In without a notice and not question her about It. Jenny would be 100% fine with this If they'd go this route. She plans on asking them this very thing tomorrow.

They can use them any way they want but If It's anything other then being sick I need to know about It so I can plan ahead.

As you do with certain hunting situations but as you've stated before you do what you think Is right whether the law/regulation's says so or not. Were doing what we think Is right and are willing to pay the consequences. There's going to be a time when I'm working and and there's nothing Jenny can do but stay home, surprisingly this hasn't happened yet. Also State law says daycare's cannot take a sick child. She does go to day care.

    Steve.

Sorry to hear your daughter was/is sick and hope she recovers soon.

As far as what Jenny did is what any mother would do.

I went through something similar a few years back when my wife was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, I called work and told them I am not coming in, according to law I was allowed to be off work for 3 months without pay before I lost my job.

So what Jenny took 3 lousy days off work without pay whats the big deal with her employer or is he just a jerk.

Your right family comes first and no job is more important than family.

No employer has the right to talk to an employee like they are dirt or make threats.

It don't matter if Jenny had sick days or vacation days if she elects to take time off without pay to be with her sick child then so be it and if an employer fires a person for taking the time to be with a sick child then as far as I am concerned they are nothing more than self centered, egotistical (sp) morons.

I agree. Good luck to her.

    Again....agree. Seems only right.

You're absolutely right. I'll be the 1st one to admit that I think the "law" and "ethics" don't always sleep on the same side of the bed. AND, I'm gonna do what I think is "right" (we'll continue to use hunting as the analogy), law be damned.

The flip side of that is.....if I do something I think is right....and it's against the law....I'll accept the repercussions. Eyes wide open.

Then what is this thread discussing?

Like I've been saying.....she "may" be able to use vacation days for these times. If so, she has a choice to make (do I use "bank" my vacation days....knowing I'm probably going to need them to stay out with my sick child? Or, do I use them for family trips, then take them anyway?).

If she chooses to go the latter route....then you've got that covered.

    Steve,

I think you are taking a lot of what I said earlier and what some of the other posters said too personal. Like I said in the PM, no matter who posted this, I would have said the same thing.

I'm not going to respond to everything you said to me, only one thing, as I don't think it will do any good in this discussion....you have your mind made up.

The only thing I would like to point out is this.....

Is not the same thing as the original post.....

The two above quotes are completely different scenarios. The first quote makes it sound like she needed the ER, the second, not so much.

All I know is, if Jill was at a job for the first year, and one of my kids was exactly as you originally described the situation, I would have been home and made sure she was at work. To me, the job is as important as the sick child.....seeing as her life was not in danger and I am perfectly capable of taking care of her. I'm not questioning you, its just a difference of opinion I guess.

With that said, keep in clean ladies and not turn this into a pissing match, or I'll have to lock it up. :)

I guess a lot has to do with the "type of business" for lack of a better term. At my Golf Course it's pretty much a family atmosphere with most of my employees. I dont' have a problem helping them, guiding them, just being friends, etc... Fine line to walk but it's known when it comes down to it business is business. Be good to me and my company and I'll be good to you. Which is why I took the stance I did. One of my employees kids gets sick it's almost like one of our own. Right wrong or indifferent this is the atmosphere that works for us in our business.

Take Steves girlfriends business. Seems to be a small company which usually has similar atmosphere, but maybe not. Maybe the owners/managers don't want to know anything but the business aspect. That's the case with a lot of companies.

Then you have really big business where everything is cut and dried. Then school systems, civil service jobs, etc.. .where sick days, vacation time is spelled out to a T. On and on and on there are thousands of variables depending on the ownership/management and their philosophy.

To be honest... (nothing deragatory here ) I laugh at the "system" businesses , civil service jobs, schools, etc... that type of employment. Don't get me wrong about the businesses themselves I understand their importance. I'm talking more about the sick days, personal days, vacation time, punching in and out etc... I'm ovlivious to that type of system. I punch out when I fall over dead tired at the end of the day. I have no idea what a "sick day" is.

I guess my point is there are a lot of different systems to fall into as far as employment goes. Some get into better situations and places to work than others. Everyone runs business and treats employees different.

NY--I sure as heck would like to work at a place where people take care of one another. I also like the idea of working for someone who will support me and in turn I would support them when times were tough. I am working a local government job and the rigidity is beginning to wear thin. Ughhhh. Why didn't I major in business is beyond me? Saw my head off!@! :)

Steve did you clear this with the milk Mafia? Or did you use one of those oh so valuable sick days? If you are still coming up fishing next week I dont want you wasteing those damn vacation days on a sick kid! There is hospitals and other places you can dump sick kids off. Plus if you did take time off (after going through the appropriate channels) to take care of a ill child you better keep your ass off the computer!!!!:D

I wonder if there isn't something lost in all this. Going way back to the original post, Schultz, you said that she was the only secretary there and her boss told her to have a backup plan next time. I wonder if all this could have been avoided if there was someone at her work that she could train to fill in for her if something like this happens again, especially if one of her job duties is to answer the phone and if she isn't there, then there is no one to do that. Maybe that's all he meant by a "backup plan".
