Since the Thermacell doesn't have a tick repellent, what do you do for ticks while hunting, if anything?

    Thanks!

Just make sure when you spray this stuff, it is outside and no pets around until its completely dry. Apparently when this stuff is wet it can cause some issues, with cats especially . Once its dried, its all good!

Your not supposed to put that stuff on skin right? I having used it yet but after Sunday I'm going to try it.
I used a scentless tick repellent on Sunday called repel tick defense. Pulled one off my belly when I got home and caught one crawling up my leg today when I was driving to work.

Besides the Permethrin keep you pants tucking in your boots if you can, and shirt tucked into pants. Don't let them get to your skin. If they manage to survive the Permethrin make them crawl as far as possible before finding a place to dig in.

Dont apply directly to skin. Apply to clothing until saturated & let clothing air dry. Will be good through several wash cycles then too

Oh so you don't even put it on your socks and pants while your wearing them. That's good to know. Nice that I can last a wash.

Permethrin everything you take to the woods. Even my SUV's interior and Rhino Skin tops and bottoms.

I have tried that Repel Tick Defense as well. It does not work. Only
    permethrin has worked for me.

I have a pair of Cabela's Insect Defense pants. They worked great for a year or two. I believe most of the actual active repellent in them has now been washed out though. I think Permethrin was mixed into the fabric but I could be wrong.

So many ticks in northern Wisconsin you can pull 20+ off walking into each camera in the late spring and early summer. when you have 20 cameras that's a lot of ticks to deal with. I can tell you for a fact that the Repel Tick Defense stuff works 0% maybe 1% tops. I am better off walking into cameras in shorts then spraying that stuff on me.

How cold does it need to be for ticks to be less prevalent?

I use SAWYER brand permethrin available at Walmart and some sporting good stores or online. Important to read the label on any product like this. As mentioned earlier apply to clothes hanging online and let completely dry before wearing. Tuck pants into socks or tie off.

Elimitick clothing sold by GAMEHIDE is pretreated and lasts 70 washings and I have used the pants and shirt for several years with excellent results.

The permethrin product from TRACTOR SUPPLY recommended in a previous post IS NOT recommended for people, only cattle. It might be ok for clothing but I would not use it. Follow directions. Saving money on some things is fine but something like this where the could be some health issues is something I will not take a chance with.

I have had Lyme three times an Ehrlichiosis once and still have bad days so I now take all precautions.

As for how cold for ticks to not be a problem. Not sure but I have seen ticks fall off deer shot in late November when deer is brought into a warm building. I doubt they are active on brush but only if attached to an animal before it is cold. Check yourself after visiting a taxidermy shop.

Sawyer brand is what i have used in the past & continue to use also. I have also treated my hip waders with it for trout fishing opener!

that's b/c its a 10% solution. dilute it to a 0.5% solution and you have exactly the same product in the Sawyer's bottle. Apply to clothes let dry and hunt. I've probably done 10 refills of my Sawyers bottle for about $5 total. I spend a ton of time in the woods and high grass fields all spring, summer and fall, and have pulled one tick off of me in 8 years.

Note its also "NOT recommended" to swim right after you eat a meal.

Yes, one can do that. My bottle of Sawyer lasts me one spring/summer/fall and I am in the woods nearly every day. The Elimitick clothing lasts several years with no retreatment.

The no swimming after eating rule is a fallacy and no longer used.
