I am looking to try a thumb activated release - probably a carter. I want one that I can clip onto my D loop and leave while in the stand. How can I tell which releases work this way? It's hard to tell from their website.

I'd have to go through their website but it sounds from your explanation, that all of them will suffice.

You can do that but be aware that the triggers are hairy on them and if you bump it accidentally it'll be on the ground as the buck of your lifetime is under you sniffing it. I keep my Carter Target 4 in my pocket until it's game time. It clicks in quick and easy.

I have a question for you thumb release guys. What is the benefit of the thumb release over the wrist straps?

To confirm: if the release looks like this picture, then it will clip to and and remain on my string until the trigger is activated.

I bought mine from Jeff and love it, so much so I wouldn't sale it back to him, LOL. No worries on bumping the release, I dropped the pin out of my climber half way up but never my release.

In general: more solid and consistant anchor and better follow through on the shot = better accuracy.

Thanks Kodiak! I've been thinking about switching. I guess I'll just go to pro shop and try some out.

I shoot an ST-3, and while it can't be left on the string, it's certainly allowed me to find a much more consistent anchor. Like Jeff mentioned, for me, I would have to re-sight pretty drastically switching between a thumb release and a wrist/caliper release. That's why I decided to just use one release for everything.

I just switched to a thumb release a month again and I can shoot that and my wrist strap without re-sighting.

I currently use both without resighting. I get to the same anchor. I do like the thumb release better, but I plan on hunting with the wrist strap for the simple fact that I know where it will be when it comes down to crunch time.

Same here, I can switch from my Carter to my Truball caliper without resighting.

That sucks to have to resight. I'd hate that.

How will thumb releases effect your draw length? Mine makes me feel as if the draw length is too short, i guess that could be because of a different anchor point or the shorter head

I like Ben's theory he told me on the movement. Thumb release = less movement. Less movement means less chance of pushing or pulling the bow away from it's target. Makes sense to me.

TRUBall Also makes a few thumb trigger caliper releases that will stay on your loop. I picked up a Pro Diamond Extreme after trying it at a pro shop. I fell in love with it after a few arrows. One nice thing about the TRUBall ones is that they have wrist straps and lanyards available for the thumb releases as well. I haven't picked one up as of yet, but will before hunting season starts, just in case.

The wrist strap release I have now is TRUBall (Tornado) and that was the brand I was looking at staying with if/when I go to a thumb release. I have been looking at the Pro Diamond Xtreme.
